This is probably one of the most random and seriously exciting things I’ve been fortunate enough to be involved in this year. Last week Saturday I was sitting having coffee in Parkhurst when these two guys sitting close by whip open a laptop and start playing this TV series. I think nothing of it and carry on sipping my espresso.

Yet there is only so much you can laugh under your breath at hilarious comedy an arms length away from you at a coffee shop. So I interject and ask if I have it right and what I am listening to is actually a South African version of ‘The Office’.

Fast forward about a week and notonTV is live.

This is a homage to the original The Office series by the guys at notonTV. NotonTV is a new youtube channel providing local comedy content that you largely won’t find on SA TV because it would be deemed ‘unPC’ or too ‘sensitive’ for SA TV viewers.

I spoke with the guys at notonTV and 100% back their concept of saying what people want to hear said and doing what people want to have done.

Here’s their homage to ‘The Office’, it is incredibly hilarious and has great production values. Gone are the days of slapstick comedy and badly lit film sets.

I have been involved with the It Starts With You organisation (see the video to your left) and the IMC on and off over the past few years.

I am absolutely blown away by the campaign that the Jupiter Drawing Room has put together for them. Have a look:

What are your thoughts? I am quite intrigued by the pay it forward sort of approach that they have taken. I like it. You give, others will see you give, intervene, be nice, kind and do the same and the process is doubled in effort and so on and so on. Let’s hope it’s a real possibility. Similar Posts:

HELL YES!

With South Africa’s current political situation the best thing that we can do for the citizens of this country is expose them to as many different choices as possible.

A recent comment on this blog alluded to the fact that South Africa’s democracy is failing because we almost become a single party state. This is problematic because people begin to think that there is only one option when they vote. Instead of thinking that there are many options, people be default and almost instinct begin to vote for one party and in SA that party is the ANC. This becomes more problematic because people begin to feel as if the alternative isn’t representative and in turn believe that they should not vote because there are no options.

The worst thing that can happen to a democratic society is for the citizens of the country to become apathetic. Apathy breeds inaction and inaction breeds dictatorship. Edmund Burke said “Evil prevails when good people do nothing”. This is the truth right now in our political climate. We need action.

IOL reports: “The public broadcaster told the Independent Communications Authority of SA (Icasa) that the flighting of political party messages could cost it up to R91,8-million in lost advertising revenue.

“It’s a lot of money… Eighty percent of our revenue comes from advertising,” said SABC news chief Snuki Zikalala.

“[It will] dent our finances, badly, badly.”

Hmmm… let us see, shall we rather dent the finances of the governmental broadcaster (read voice) or shall we rather attempt to keep our democracy in place? I am voting for the latter. I believe that one of the biggest problems facing the citizens of this nation is lack of voter education. We don’t know what parties we can vote for, can you name just six parties in SA? If you an I am sure you are one of the few. If you can’t welcome to the club. To me the most sensible thing to do is send out adverts on our national broadcaster to the public which indicate that the most important thing to the government and its broadcaster is the public and their education.

I am sure there are many people who will disagree with me on this one but I am, right now, rallying for votes, voting and action. Screw the public broadcaster’s back pocket. Screw the CEO’s and bigwigs bonuses. What the hell is R9mill at the end of the day? That’s the difference between 9 top managers and their wives Mercedes and the honour of our democracy. Similar Posts:

Hope he doesn’t mind that I’ve taken some of his brilliant words;

Brilliant. Just noticed this while channel flipping. M-Net are going to start showing repeats of popular shows… based on load shedding schedules. So, Eskom takes you down – fear not, because the latest episode of the late 30s hormonal housewives or whiny promiscuous doctors is just a channel-click away.

I think this is a sterling idea if you are a TV loving obsessive surfing type of person. Mnet hasn’t really been at the forefront of pushing the envelope in technological developments and different sorts of viewing (in my opinion). But this is a refreshing move for them that I can recognise is necessary.

However you know its coming, I think that people seriously need to let the TV thing go. Maybe we should be using this load shedding to recover our innate need to communicate with people we don’t usually communicate with. So my thoughts? Get over it, have a cup of Rooibos tea, light up a candle and talk to your family. Similar Posts:
