Nelson Mandela’s First Television interview [video]

Posted on 30 July 2010 by Nic Haralambous

This video was filmed in 1962. What a fantastic find. I first watched it over at OpenCulture

Mandela always commanded respect with the way he spoke, the authority he spoke with and the determination on his face. It is incredible to think how far things have progressed in the 48 years since the above interview.

On an aside, it is quite startling to me to note how little journalistic filming techniques have developed in the past 48 years.

NotonTV brings you a South African office

Posted on 17 May 2010 by Nic Haralambous

This is probably one of the most random and seriously exciting things I’ve been fortunate enough to be involved in this year. Last week Saturday I was sitting having coffee in Parkhurst when these two guys sitting close by whip open a laptop and start playing this TV series. I think nothing of it and carry on sipping my espresso.

Yet there is only so much you can laugh under your breath at hilarious comedy an arms length away from you at a coffee shop. So I interject and ask if I have it right and what I am listening to is actually a South African version of ‘The Office’.

Fast forward about a week and notonTV is live.

This is a homage to the original The Office series by the guys at notonTV. NotonTV is a new youtube channel providing local comedy content that you largely won’t find on SA TV because it would be deemed ‘unPC’ or too ‘sensitive’ for SA TV viewers.

I spoke with the guys at notonTV and 100% back their concept of saying what people want to hear said and doing what people want to have done.

Here’s their homage to ‘The Office’, it is incredibly hilarious and has great production values. Gone are the days of slapstick comedy and badly lit film sets.

Thanks to all my family, friends and online buddies for the kind wishes and warm words. Now listen, change and let the positive action start with you!

Mark had a great point and I can’t believe I overlooked it!! Here is the link to the site for the entire project, It Starts With You!!!

Mnet gets innovative in the dark

Posted on 19 March 2008 by Nic Haralambous

Thanks must go out to Andy for this beaut!

Hope he doesn’t mind that I’ve taken some of his brilliant words;

Brilliant. Just noticed this while channel flipping. M-Net are going to start showing repeats of popular shows… based on load shedding schedules. So, Eskom takes you down – fear not, because the latest episode of the late 30s hormonal housewives or whiny promiscuous doctors is just a channel-click away.

I think this is a sterling idea if you are a TV loving obsessive surfing type of person. Mnet hasn’t really been at the forefront of pushing the envelope in technological developments and different sorts of viewing (in my opinion). But this is a refreshing move for them that I can recognise is necessary.

However you know its coming, I think that people seriously need to let the TV thing go. Maybe we should be using this load shedding to recover our innate need to communicate with people we don’t usually communicate with. So my thoughts? Get over it, have a cup of Rooibos tea, light up a candle and talk to your family.
