Wimpy cracks open it’s 500th store

Posted on 06 October 2009 by Nic Haralambous

Well isn’t that something!

This from the press release:

Did you know that Wimpy was in South Africa before the first man walked on the moon? The first Wimpy opened on the 1st of September 1967 in Murchies Passage, Durban and now, 42 years on, Wimpy, South Africa’s favourite family restaurant, is now celebrating the opening of the 500th restaurant, situated in The Grove Shopping Centre in Pretoria.

If you have any interest in visiting the 500th Wimpy the head over to: The Grove Shopping Centre which is situated on the corner of Lynnwood road and Simon Vermooten road in Pretoria.

I think it’s an incredible achievement that a food chain has become a part of country. If you don’t agree with that sentence, tell me if you know anyone who hasn’t stopped at a Wimpy on a long drive somewhere (particularly for me, someone who has never stopped half way to Durban from JHB who’s had a Wimpy burger on the way). I know not one! Wimpy rocks.

Oh – and my little cousin has appeared in a Wimpy campaign too, so maybe he’s now a part of that legacy!

There is also a competition you can join on Wimpy’s Facebook page:

Tell us about your favourite Wimpy memory or share a photo – for the first 500 people who share their memories with us, Wimpy will donate R50 per person to the Wimpy Charitable Trust – proceeds go to charity!

Union Buildings, Pretoria – Virtual tour

Posted on 04 February 2009 by Nic Haralambous

I absolutely love the idea of virtual tours. The guys over at Virtual Africa are doing a sterling job of capturing Africa and allowing us to view it online, 360degrees around.

Here’s one I found from virtualtourguide of the Union Buildings in Pretoria. Actually quite a magnificent place to visit if you never have. Be sure to look for little white arrows that appear in the images below, click them to be taken to a new venue. Takes a bit of time to load.

Be sure, once things have loaded, to enter “Full screen mode”. You will be amazed.

Are crime summits the way forward?

Posted on 08 January 2008 by Nic Haralambous

I read on Jacaranda’s news blog that the Freedom Front Plus have called for citizens in Pretoria to come together at a crime summit.

According to Jacaranda’s blog this comes after “a family in Pretoria East was robbed three times on the same night and after another family in Waterkloof Ridge was robbed twice in the space of four days.”

I think this is an interesting idea and one that I have been talking about for a while. Community involvement is essential in the betterment of our country. Many will argue that it is not our job to curb crime, that the government should be doing it and all that jazz. I agree but don’t think that we can be standoffish. We need to band together and take our communities back. This does not imply violence of any sort, this implies unity, community and ownership. Own your problems and make them go away, own protection and start a neighbourhood watch and own your safety and that of your family.

I think this sort of initiative can work very successfully. What do you think?

Gautrain information via Youtube video

Posted on 10 October 2007 by Nic Haralambous

I found the below video via Homecoming Revolution’s blog. There is a continuing buzz in SA and Johannesburg about the Gautrain but much of it is heresay.

There is a strangely scarce amount of hard fact around and about regarding the largest Public Transport project on the African continent.

Watch the video now:
