Cape Town ranks 3rd on World Monopoly board!

Posted on 21 August 2008 by Nic Haralambous

After weeks, nay, months of rallying, blogging, Facebooking and more the voters were cast and the announcement has been made: Cape Town made it to 3rd on the World Monopoly Board!!!

I covered this extensively earlier in the year, blogging it often and calling people to action. Strange that so many answered the calls of so many to vote for CT on the board.

In a matter of weeks we went from nowhere in the rankings to top 20, top 10 and finally 3rd!

I am proud to say that I voted, I blogged it and I punted it to friends, family, at dinner parties, rugby matches and more! Apparently EA is launching the World Monopoly board as a console game across the board. The launch is somewhere in Sandton today and I am assuming globally too.

So head over to the Monopoly website and the SA Rocks blog posts for a current update and a history of the event!

Vote for Jo’burg

Posted on 05 March 2008 by Nic Haralambous

I have previously blogged about the Monopoly voting for the international monopoly board and how we need to band together and vote for CT. And we did, didn’t we?

It’s now time to vote for JHB to get to the top two of the WildCard Cities in the Monopoly competition.

Jo’burg is one of my favourite cities in the world and not just because I live here.

Some quick fire reasons why I love Jo’burg:

Afternoon storms that last 5 minutes and cool down the temperature.

The best sunsets I have ever seen

The vast amount of forestry in the middle of a city (the only metropolis that looks like a forest from space!)

The buzzing nightlife

The vibrant people all looking for opportunity and making life happen.

That’s all I think we need to be motivated to vote for Jo’burg. So get to it!

Voting blind – Monopoly International

Posted on 22 February 2008 by Nic Haralambous

The screen is bare, the list is barren, there is nothing to see. It seems as though it’s all about blind voting!

Monopoly really seems to have understood this whole web2.0 thing. I am incredibly impressed with how they have maintained this competition. It just goes to show that all it takes is an idea to go viral. No amount of marketing can compare to a great idea.

There are 6 days, 17 hours, 56 minutes left to vote at the time of writing this. So get to the site now and vote.

I must have a very quick rant on this topic though. News24 published an article about the voting and this entire process that really got under my skin. For the record, I live in JHB and have never lived in CT. I haven’t been to CT throughout this entire process, yet some stupid woman (the CEO of Cape Town Tourism, Mariette du Toit-Helmbold) says,

“In less than three weeks Cape Town has climbed to the 3rd place on the leaderboard. It is a wonderful tribute to Brand Cape Town and the people that make Brand Cape Town so remarkable,” she told News24.

“Cape Town Tourism wishes to commend fellow Capetonians, the tourism industry, the media and Cape Town’s global network of friends that have contributed to Cape Town’s rapid ascent.”

Firstly this is not a tribute to Cape Town Tourism, this is a tribute to Cape Town and people like us who make use of social media platforms to rally around something we believe in. Don’t get all clingy now lady. And secondly, why did she have to go and make this about area? Why couldn’t she have thanked South Africans for voting, why specify Capetonians? It bugs me and I have had a fair amount of Joburgers and Durbanites email to tell me how irritated it makes them that they were excluded inspite of voting EVERY DAY for the last few weeks.

I kind of feel the same.

Anyways, Capetonians are cool man and I think we should help them (and our country) get to the top spot, so keep voting even though you can’t see the cities in the lead!

Cape Town Monopoly Update

Posted on 08 February 2008 by Nic Haralambous

This might seem a bit strange but I truly feel like it’s necessary to blog this.

Since my last blog post regarding Cape Town and the Monopoly competition:

Facebook group – Has gone from under 100 members to over 6000.
Cape Town – Gone from top 100 to Number 6 on the rankings!!
Johannesburg moved up to Number 9 in the Wild Card City Rankings!!

This is absolutely astounding to me. Cape Town is actually going to be on the board, and might even make it in to the top spots!

Congratulations to everyone who has voted and especially to all the active people in the Facebook group. I really think that you have all made a difference.

Vote for Cape Town on the World Monopoly Board

Posted on 24 January 2008 by Nic Haralambous

Seems like Cape Town is really in the SA Rocks sights this week. I found this one via Facebook.

Cape Town is one of the Cities that you can vote for to become a city on the World Monopoly Board.

What a great idea in general. We’ve almost all heard of or played monopoly. I would love to see a South African city represented on the World Monopoly Board. And let’s be honest Cape Town is not just a South African great it’s a continent and world great that deserves to be on the list.

Here is how the Facebook group explains the voting:

Firstly visit the site.

Then follow these instructions:

1. REGISTER
2. LOG IN
3. ADD CAPE TOWN TO YOUR CITIES BY CLICKING “ADD TO MY CITIES.”
4. GO TO “MY CITIES”
5. CLICK ON VOTE
6. ENTER THE NUMBERS THAT ARE ALWAYS SO STUPIDLY HARD TO READ
7. VOTE EVERY DAY UNTIL 29 FEBRUARY!

And you’re done.

I really think this is a different and interesting topic to rally some votes for so let’s get on it!!
