Let’s discuss Alan Donald and England

Posted on 19 September 2007 by Nic Haralambous

The Spingboks have Eddie Jones and we think it’s fantastic that we have him controlling our backline and that we are getting one up on the Aussies.

donald.jpgI saw Alan Donald being interviewed when England was playing SA in the T20 World Cup on Sunday. Strangely though, he was not wearing SA kit. He was wearing England kit. My first reaction was to swear at him and call him a traitor. But then I thought about it and decided that he is doing what is best for him, his family and his career. His career is cricket. The job takes him wherever it takes him.

If he were a banker and he was promoted and asked to head up the British branch in London, we’d all applaud him, but because it is sport, our beloved sport, we berate people like Donald. And he isn’t alone. There are many SA sportsmen and women playing sports for other nations. Just look at the Rugby World Cup. Almost every team in the tournament has an ex-SA player playing for them.

I want to know what you think. Is Donald out of his mind? Is he simply earning a living and why is it that he isn’t the bowling coach for SA?

Let’s Discuss: The grass might be greener but the poo still smells

Posted on 19 July 2007 by Nic Haralambous

After reading Trash Media‘s post a few days ago I thought it might be worth bringing up the topic of emigration.

Is it worth trying to campaign to keep people in SA? Should SA let those go who wish to leave?

I am a firm believer in staying and building and making a difference rather than fleeing to supposed “greener” pastures. I don’t truly believe that anywhere is better than SA, just different, with different issues and problems.

What do you think?

Let’s Discuss: Your reason why people should visit SA

Posted on 11 July 2007 by Nic Haralambous

This is a bit more of a cheerful discussion session. I want to know why you think people should visit South Africa. Take care here, I am looking for your personal reason why you think people SHOULD visit SA. Be careful not to let this discussion drift in to the never-ending pit of negativity and why people shouldn’t visit SA.

We all know crime is an issue, we all know people are striking but in the face of these things let’s discuss our reasons to visit the country.

I will kick things off with my one reason why people should visit SA: To sit and “gods window” and look out at the view below.

Let’s discuss: 18 years and you’re legal

Posted on 09 July 2007 by Nic Haralambous

I am really interested to find out what people think about the new law that has been passed that makes 18 year olds legal. Legally 18 year olds can now enter in to contracts amongst a host of other niceties.

Do you think this is a good thing or a bad thing? What could the pros and cons be? I think that it is great that talented young individuals can take advantage of their youth and start at a young age with their business ventures. However, I think there is a great chance that this law can be abused. Not all 18 year olds are savvy when it comes to business, they can be trapped in to contracts that they should not be able to be.

What are your thoughts?

Let’s discuss: Smoking in SA, will it actually happen?

Posted on 04 July 2007 by Nic Haralambous

I am interested to know what people think about passing a law that bans smokers from smoking within 50 metres of anyone at all times. This would mean no smoking in or near a shopping centre, at work, in your car or anywhere else for that matter. The only place that smoking would be allowed would be in the privacy of your own home.

Below is a list of countries that have some major ban or another:

# 1 Albania
# 2 Argentina
# 3 Australia
# 4 Belgium
# 5 Bhutan
# 6 Canada
# 7 Czech Republic
# 8 Denmark
# 9 Finland
# 10 France
# 11 Guernsey
# 12 Hong Kong
# 13 Hungary
# 14 Iceland
# 15 Ireland
# 16 Isle of Man
# 17 Italy
# 18 Jersey
# 19 Lithuania

# 20 Malta
# 21 Netherlands
# 22 New Zealand
# 23 Norway
# 24 Portugal
# 25 Singapore
# 26 Sweden
# 27 Switzerland
# 28 United Kingdom
* 28.1 England
* 28.2 Scotland
* 28.3 Northern Ireland
* 28.4 Wales
# 29 United States of America
# 30 Uruguay

Do you think that smoking ban is realistic? We all know that it is a great law to be passed (I say this as a smoker) but will it happen in SA? Are there not more important things to consider?

Let’s Discuss The Bokke Or The Protea

Posted on 26 June 2007 by Nic Haralambous

Are we for or against the unifying of the national sports teams emblem?

I am personally not too phased if there is unity, but I think that the Protea should take a walk and the Springbok should swing in to the mix.

What are your thoughts, Protea or no Protea?

Lets Discuss: The Public Service Strike

Posted on 13 June 2007 by Nic Haralambous

I am trying something different here at SA Rocks. I want to open up a discussion forum on topical issues with the SA Rocks readers.

The first topic I would like to see discussed is the very topical, very current Public Service Strike taking place.

There are some rules though:

Comments on this post will be moderated – This will take place for obvious reasons. I am not looking for ranting, swearing and abuse. I want well justified, objective and fairly represented points of view. If you are abusive in any way your comments will be removed.

Expect rebuttle – Not necessarily from me, but from well informed readers who might have another opinion.

That’s it. If you would like other topics discussed please email me and let me know!
