Yes it is that lovely time of year again. When the grass turns to a deep shade of green, the sky rolls over to a luminous blue and the clouds move along just enough to provide with comfortable amounts of shade.

This all means that it’s the perfect time for Rocking The Daisies and Rocking The Gardens to descend upon us and blow our minds.

It’s Summertime, in a nutshell. I am normally a Wintertime person but who can deny that the cooler things definitely happen in Summer.

GoodLife Fine Brandy Festival – We love Brandy

Posted on 19 May 2009 by Nic Haralambous

Let’s be honest, anyone who is over the age of 18, living in South Africa and has never tasted a Klippies and Coke has not lived. I mean that.

It’s my drink of choice and it is often looked down upon by the alleged upmarketers in Sandton. But I don’t care. I learned to love it while studying in Grahamstown and never looked back.

Now there is an entire festival dedicated to Brandy. We love Brandy.

The details:

When: 20 – 22 May 2009
Where: Sandton Sun

I am excited about this event and am going to do my best to attend. For more information you can visit sabrandy.co.za.

For something a bit different I discovered that wine routes are not the the only alcoholic routes in SA:

Another fantastic Taste of Joburg

Posted on 13 October 2008 by Nic Haralambous

Last year I attended the very first Taste of Joburg event. It was, without a doubt, one of the best events of the year for me. I loved it. The food is incredible, the beverages are available and equally fantastic and the vibe is just great.

This year they moved the venue from Wanderers to Monte Casino. I was apprehensive about this and was really interested to see if this years event would hold up to my expectations from last years event.

I was not disappointed.

One of the highlights of the night was Watershed playing live at the event. They were, as always, professional and crisp. They played some of their new music from their new album which is great.

There were 16 top class restaurants that were showcased at this years Taste event. That is a big step up from last year which is great to see. The event is clearly growing from strength to strength. More people attended this year, more food and wine on display and still a fantastic vibe throughout the night.

Do yourself a favour and pencil in next years Taste of Joburg. I penciled this ones in last year and have already sworn to be at next years. There aren’t many events that I plan a year in advance. This is one of them.

Jail 4 Bail – Locked up to raise money

Posted on 06 June 2008 by Nic Haralambous

Interesting concept and not one that I think I would be too keen to try out. “Jailing” yourself while you wait for other people to donate 1 million rand your way. Even if it is for a good cause, I think it’s an admirable goal!

The basic aim of the event is to raise money for Autism Western Cape and the main “culprit” is Gerhard Pieterse, the Executive Director of Autism Western Cape.

What exactly is Jail 4 Bail?

The “Jail4bail” concept aims to raise a minimum of R 1 000 000 (One Million Rand), commencing Monday 16 June 2008 (National Youth Day). The beneficiaries for this project will be:
Autism Western Cape
Tableview Community Police Forum (20% of the funds shall be allocated towards a police station in Parklands and training to assist SAPS and CPF to deal with offenders who may have mental disabilities).

Gerhard will be “arrested” by Tableview police and escorted to his jail cell in The Atrium at Bayside Mall on National Youth Day, Monday 16 June 2008 to raise a minimum of R 1 000 000 (One Million Rand).

He will not leave his cell, other than visitations, until the target amount has been raised. The suggested time frame to conclude the project is Friday, 27 June 2008.

In addition to Gerhard, the incoming President of the Round Table Association of South Africa, Danie van Rensburg, shall also be locking himself up and calling for funds from his international counterparts and Round Table South Africa.

The Vice-President of the West Coast Chamber of Commerce, Michelle Korevaar has also committed to being locked up.

There are a few ways to contribute:

Sponsorship
Sponsors through cash donation and product sponsorship.

Donations
“Bail” participants out with a minimum of R100 per donation.

Visitation Rights Donation
Visitation rights for a fee of R10.

To find out more information about the project and the organisations involved visit www.autismwesterncape.org.za or www.spice4life/jail4bail or contact Autism Western Cape on 0861 (AUTISM) 288476 for brochures, handbooks and general information.

I will be donating money in a sort of “Visitation Rights Donation” mechanism once Gerhard has been “arrested” in an interview with the man himself while he is imprisoned! Keep a look out for that coming soon.

Pangea Day – changing minds

Posted on 25 April 2008 by Nic Haralambous

Ed’s note: Today’s blog is yet another great sumbission from a reader! I like the idea and in essence the below does what SA Rocks is trying to do, we just use different media to portray a message.

Here’s a video to see in the post:

Dear SA Rocks,

I dont know if you have heard about this but it seems like there aren’t many South African events on this day.I am not even sure if any of the South African TV channels are broadcasting it.

Pangea Day taps the power of film to strengthen tolerance and compassion while uniting millions of people to create a better future.

In a world where people are often divided by borders, difference, and conflict, it’s easy to lose sight of what we all have in common. Pangea Day seeks to overcome that – to help people see themselves in others – through the power of film.

On May 10, 2008 – Pangea Day – venues in Cairo, Kigali, London, Los Angeles, Mumbai and Rio de Janeiro will be linked to produce a 4 hour program of power films, visionary speakers, and uplifting music.

More importantly, the program will be broadcast live to the world through the Internet, television, digital cinemas, and mobile phones.

Of course, movies alone can’t change the world. But the people who watch them can. So following May 10, 2008, Pangea Day organizers will facilitate community-building activities around the world connecting inspired viewers with numerous organizations which are already doing groundbreaking work.

Please take a look at the following videos for more information. I have also created a facebook group for South Africa.

Amazing Race for charity

Posted on 31 March 2008 by Nic Haralambous

This year saw the third annual Amazing Race in Joburg take place. More than 80 teams took part in the event in 2008.

The event is basically a clue hunt to raise money for charity. This year the event supported The Princess Alice adoption home and a Primary School called Paradise Bend in Lanseria.

I think this is a great initiative that was started by the same gentlemen who created the hugely successful Facebook group for the International Monopoly board voting for Cape Town.

The Times were there in full force and not only covered the event but participated in it too.
