Archbishop Desmond Tutu launches free music website

Posted on 07 May 2008 by Nic Haralambous

Yes, you read that title correctly.

I am really surprised there hasn’t been more coverage of this event.

The site is called WeLoveFreeMusic and is set to get things shaken up online and in the music world. Hell, with Tutu and the big guy behind you how can you go wrong?

Tutu is one smart man (over and above being peace loving). I think that this is either a smart move be the site’s creators – getting an Archbishop to endorse such a project – or a smart move on the part of the Archbishop.

It just goes to show that no matter how old you are, what “industry” (can god be an industry?) you are in or what your past looks like, you can do anything.

Free music is absolutely imperative in today’s era of piracy and downloads. It benefits the bands and benefits the listeners.

Basically I am all for this site and Tutu’s actions. Good for you Archbishop Tutu, you show them, you show them all!

The site will offer free mp3 downloads. As of right now there aren’t a whole host of bands or groups available on the site, but hey, it’s a start. Apparently SOS records has been on a bit lately trying to tell people that they have the power to sign whichever bands they choose (the public that is). So basically you like a band and if enough people agree, SOS will sign them. Interesting.

There have been a few hiccups and non-believers, see Wired, Inquisitr and Cnet News for more information.
