Glad to be a girl wins bloggie!

Posted on 17 March 2009 by Nic Haralambous

It’s always been pretty tough to represent locally when it comes to international awards online. The market is much larger than ours when you look abroad, many are dismissive of what we have to offer and some have simply yet to discover the jems that emerge from Africa.

However one blogger is breaking that mould. Glad to be a girl has taken home the Best African Weblog award at the Ninth Annual Weblog Awards. I think this is a fantastic achievement for the blog and for South African bloggers alike.

What a fantastic achievement and my congratulations go out to Philly Girl. Catch her on twitter too.

I attended the Digital Citizen Indaba and the Highway Africa 2008 conference. One of the highlights and surprises of the Highway Africa conference for me was meeting Khaya Dlanga, a video blogger and blogger from South Africa.

I have blogged about Khaya’s work before and truly believe that he is one of the few successful local Vloggers who has managed to pull of a YouTube channel with some punch behind it.

Here’s Khaya at the HA conference:

And here is Khaya after winning the award:
