Jo’burg Child Welfare 100 Doors of Hope

I was fortunate enough to receive a door. Yes, a door. One door from Jo’burg Child Welfare. They sent me a door in the hope that I could turn it in to art.

Here are the first photos of me getting organised, fixing up the door and laying down the first coats of paint:

Here’s the blurb on the goal for the 100 Doors of Hope:

100 doors and a 100 people raising money for Jo’burg Child Welfare.

JCW has tasked 100 people consisting of artists, musicians, celebrities, authors, comedians, photographers, cartoonists and graphic designers to each take an old door and turn it into a piece of art.

These doors will be auctioned in September to raise much needed funds for Jo’burg Child Welfare

Watch our progress with this project and spread the word. You can help us make this happen with a small donation:

Who is on board?
John Vlismas, Mango Groove, Jason Hartman, Evolver, Ard Matthews, Craig Native, Jeremy Maggs, Kim Engelbrecht, Grethe Fox, Hlubi Mboya, Abigail Betz, Rasty, Sharon Sampson, Ruda Landman, Jodi Bieber, Mel Bala, Soli Philander… and the list grows.

I’ve seen some absolutely magnificent doors that have already been created. Obviously my focus is on a Rocking South Africa – not surprising.

My thoughts were that I should try hard to document the entire process (whether the final product is something to behold or not) and maybe through the continual status updates on the progress of the door raise some awareness and interest in my door which will raise the purchase price at the auction!

The doors will be auctioned off to the highest bidders sometime in September. So head over to the Facebook page and have a look at your favourite door and start saving funds for a good cause!

As I go along with the door I’ll post updates on SA Rocks, Facebook and Twitter. So keep following!

The sad state of affairs in South Africa, where a regime of the ANC can splash out nearly ZAR 22 billion for a 3-week kicking event to tickle FIFA’s ego but fails so miserably to provide support for children in need and poor families, makes these door deliveries an utterly pathetic initiative to counter the wide-spread deprevation.

The drop in the bucket makes not one iota of difference for the hundreds of thousands of poor and deprived, and cannot even remotely compensate for the deliberate failures that the ANC imposes on our country. Ironically enough, the ANC fails its core black voters the most!

thank you for the feedback Elgar. We as a charity are aware of the financial challenges we face.
but rather than moan about something that we cannot change, Jo’burg Child Welfare is finding creative ways to raise funds in order to continue with the work we do. If you think my fundraising initiative is so pathetic, please advise me on how you would raise funds. i would appreciate some positive advise as well.

Child Welfare is an organisation that I counted on years ago for help with my stepson. They never let me down. I have supported them for many years in their various initiatives. This door thingy sounds tremendous. I am an artist (check out my website) and would enjoy this challenge. Only thing is that the doors are too heavy for me to handle. I am 64 years old now, and have just undergone abdominal surgery for a mass that was attached to my spine so I am unable to pick up or move heavy objects for some months yet I(maybe for ever). I wish you everything of the best in your endeavours to help needy kids. I am a CANSA volunteer and meet disadvantaged and needy persons who are really ill. I do what I can to help them. I am not good with people, so am involved in fundraising initiatives. We will be having an Art for Cansa auction on 1st October at the Riebeek Valley Hotel in Riebeek West. I was given the work of collecting artworks for the auction. I managed to collect 22 donated works thus far and am still collecting. How about Child Welfare organising something like this? (Since you asked Negative Elgar for fundraising ideas, I thought you might like to pick Positive Lindy’s brains instead…)
Warm regards, and best wishes for a successful door auction,
    Lindy du Toit
