Is it time to leave South Africa?

Posted on 09 April 2010

No. It isn’t.

I have a bee in my shoe (not in my bonnet). It’s stinging me. It’s always there in a place that you can’t quite find but you can feel it stinging the underside of your foot. And it hurts.

Over the last two days I have read countless emails, SMS’s, tweets and Facebook status updates along the lines: “I’m seriously considering leaving this country”.

Let me just understand this correctly. Once upon a time AWB political stalwart Eugène Terre’Blanche is murdered, Julius Malema kicks a journalist out of a media briefing and says stupid things (Shock, horror, awe) and an AWB Spokesperson, interviewer and anchor make fools of themselves and some South Africans decide it’s time to openly, in a public forum, declare that it’s time to consider leaving this place.

I am offended. I am offended by the lack of back-bone. I am offended by people’s strength of will or apparent lack thereof. If you take offense at these comments, then these comments are aimed directly at you.

Why is it always the first reaction of people to openly state that it’s time to leave SA when something they don’t like happens? Why do people always want to run? If your husband/wife/sibling/mother/father says or does something that irritates you, hurts you or offends you do you immediately decide to leave them? No you don’t. The first reaction that many people have is to fix the problem. Yet when it comes to our country many people think it best to run away.

I believe this to be cowardice. I know I am taking a strong and hard line on this and I know it isn’t always as black and white (pun intended) as it may first appear. I know that there are complications, children involved, people are busy, lives are full and blah blah blah. But there always seems to be time for us to go out, get pissed, smoke, party, have dinners with friends, go on holidays over the long weekend and live the way we want. Yet there isn’t time to own your country when it needs to be owned?

It’s not those who have lived the past that are going to take South Africa in to the future. I think it’s those of us who are living the present who can see the future that we want and who need to stay in South Africa to make that future a reality.

I see three possible outcomes here:

1. You can choose to stay in SA in the good times (15 years post-apartheid) and at the first sign of discomfort threaten to flee but stay because you don’t have the guts to leave.
2. You can Leave (this is a very real, viable and perfectly acceptable option).
3. You can stay and choose to fight for what you want and take ownership of your country.

Make your decision.

You can comment that I live with blinkers on, that I ignore the truth of what is going on and that I’m an ignorant, racist, white-supramacist, black-loving, confused and idiotic hippie (I’ve been called all of these things before). Or you can get to the heart of the matter in this country; We all want what is right, as human beings, for every other human being in this country. Are you willing to fight for that, or walk away?

I await the flames.

UPDATE: The ANC have responded to Malema and openly condemned him and his actions: Read the full release now.

My very quick thoughts on this (posted on fb this morning):
Despite all the crap going on, I’m really encouraged by the attitude of our (under-30) generation. We just have to deal with a few more years of shit. A massive number of sensible, non-racial, inspirational young people out there…

  2. Gravatar Justin McCall Says:

Nic, finally somebody says it. I just didn’t quite know how to put it in writing. I agree with you 100% on the matter. There are too many people in this country who have no backbone, who want to jump ship as soon as someone says “boo or bah”. Honestly, sit your lazy white ass on the couch, and think of how you can take ownership of YOUR country. Don’t be offended by something a “know-it-all” politician says. The media around the world know exactly who Malema is, and where he stands in the country. One thing we all forget, specifically in Malema’s case, is that he is NOT a member of the SA government, he is just a mouthpiece. Grow some balls people, suck it up. I love this country. So should you.

  3. Gravatar Tracy Says:

Here Here! GREAT article and most encouraging! Thanks for speaking some sense.

  4. Gravatar Sally-Jane Says:

I am with you on this one. I love this place and I am not leaving. I will fight and I will help and I will work to make this a better SA for all. I have a responsibility to do that. I have a duty to my country and to the millions who suffered when I benefited.

  5. Gravatar Jaco Pretorius Says:

I completely disagree with you. My main gripe with articles like this is that we should expect more. We shouldn’t be satisfied with living in a country where crime and corruption runs wild. We should be seriously pissed at what’s going on! I can’t handle this attitude of ‘it’s a great country what’s wrong with you’ – we should expect more. If we have come this far that we’re ready to just accept the problems we have maybe it really is time to move on.

  6. Gravatar Andre Says:

OK. Was going to wax lyrical about “Nice to see Nic, back in the fray, etc”…
Take it as written and said =)

    Cutting to the chase…
    I choose option 3.
In the same way and for the same reason that I (stupidly) will venture out into the garden in m’jocks and m’9-iron, to confront whoever/whatever is trying to break in, in the dark, instead of just calling the armed response company. I cannot live with someone’s foot on my neck. It’s just not living.

But there’s a problem with that choice and it leads to even more of the same negative feelings.
See, having decided to stay and fight and take ownership, we need a plan. A proper plan. One with a reasonable chance of success.
It’s is like we’re in free fall, at 212mph, at the pavement below. We can be as Rah-rah as we like, and we can comfort each other and we can do good deeds that make others feel better and give back and improve their lot, up the yazoo, as we’re plummeting toward the pavement. They’re (the others) are grateful, they feel better. The pavement doesn’t give a rat’s ass. It WILL kill us, when we get there.

And. Let me be crystal clear. By we/us I mean EVERY rational, positive, clear thinking, SA-loving one of us, ab-so-fucking-lutely regardless of race.

Back to the plan. We need a parachute. A good one. Not a Facebook group (bless ‘em), or a twibbon, or a song.
What will it look like? What will the steps be? How will we measure our progress toward our goal, along the way? What exactly does each one of us need to do? Do we actually HAVE the numbers to do this?

And, finally, in the words, of Cheech Marin (in Tin Cup), we need to quit fucking around and do it.

  7. Gravatar Neritia Says:

Great post! I couldn’t have said it any better.
This does not mean that I condone any of the events over the past couple of weeks, nor do I say that murder and crime is OK! Leaving is not going to fix anything! Keeping quiet is not going to fix anything either! It’s time for all of us to tackle the problems, to voice our opinions and to demand to be heard! I love this country! I love the people of this country!
    …and yes… South Africa Rocks!!

  8. Gravatar Minnaar Says:

Nic, as someone who has had 2 uncles murdered on the same day on neighbouring farms, I think you should take into account that many people have been victims of race related crimes in SA, and their frustrations have been a long time coming. There is steady slaughter of farmers in this country, and it affects those families lives deeply. Yes, I choose to stay here, because this country and its people and its people are wonderful.

I am most definately staying, but clearly somewhere something is very very wrong in this country’s leadership. I dont care about the AWB – they are a small minded minority of whites. But at a certain point we cannot sit by and just absorb these things. Face it – we still live in a deeply, deeply racist country, and the politicians are slowly but surely letting it creep back into society.

  9. Gravatar Justin McCall Says:

@Jaco You have missed the point of the article completely. Nic is talking about South Africans wanting to leave the country at every whim. You are right Jaco, we are pissed at what is happening in the country, we are not being complacent about it and just accepting it. But what we should be doing, as Andre says, is formulating a plan to sort it out. So Jaco, you simply cannot disagree with this article, based on what you wrote. In fact, you, in some degree are agreeing with it.

@Minnaar I don’t understand why “farm murders” get more traction in the media than “everyday day senseless killings”. Might I add, that while we have our issues, we don’t live in Iraq, or Afghanistan or other countries where people get blown up by the 100s. Just speak to anybody who has worked in combat in those countries, and they will tell you how awesome South Africa is.

  10. Gravatar Nic Haralambous Says:

Jaco – You’ve hit the nail on the head. I didn’t call for inaction or acceptance of anything. I called for reaction, action and activation. Don’t sit down and take anything going on. Fight crime, get involved, help the police, start community watches and take ownership but this is a democracy and what we give, we get.

Minaar – I am incredibly saddened to hear about your uncles. That is shocking and absolutely unacceptable on any level. I agree with you, there is something that is not right in SA but people who blab on about leaving are not going to rectify the situation, they are going to make it worse for those of us trying to stay and make things right in whatever way. That’s all I’m trying to say I think.

Do you honestly think that it’s only politicians who are letting racism creep back in to SA. Have you ever told a humourus racist joke? If you have (I have friends who have) then we are the ones allowing the slip back in to racism as much as anyone else. We are all responsible. Point fingers at politicians is not the answer.

  11. Gravatar Billy Says:

I must agree with you , we cannot just up and run as this is OUR country, as far as Picanin julius mal-emma is concerned, he is getting to much attention and is getting away with bad behaviour, makeing all Afrcans look stupid, He is a disgrace to Afrca, and should be summonsed to shut his mouth, by the government. He should also be investigated by SARS, as he claims he is no director of any company, so how does he explain the R400000 party, cars etc that he owns???!!!

  12. Gravatar Walter Pike Says:

Thanks Nic, there are a bunch of people on facebook that are going to paint their faces green and march against all this race stuff. Its a bit corny but its the start of a movement.

Maybe people can start doing something – and not let the loud mouth extremists take the limelight.

  13. Gravatar Kram Says:

It’s all good and dandy to give people 3 options, but as we all know the interpretation for each is totally different.

So what is that we are going to fight for, what is it that we all want?

  14. Gravatar Elgar Says:

    http://www.eu2hell.blogspot.com

It is funny when you refer to a “murder once upon a time,” which happened just five days ago, as a backdrop from the ANC incessently recited battle cry to “shoot the Boer!”

You show persistently an awkward ignorance of what is happening in South Africa and I begin to wonder if you sit somewhere in Australia’s outback when you type these postings here?

Your postings not only show a flagrant cluelessness but also a deliberate attempt to tighten the blinds around your eyes, divulging into a blissful ignorance that allows you so stubbornly to ignore the facts, identify the ills and – logically – fail to offer viable options to rectify what is wrong in SA.

    Bless!

Actually, you contradict everything that Nic stands for: be timid, ignore, calm down, accept, appease, be a lamb, don’t rock the boat, pray, preach; and walk away victimised.

  17. Gravatar gordo Says:

Well said Nic, I couldn’t agree with you more. It’s far too easy for people to say they are heading for Perth whenever anything remotely bad happens in South Africa.

Lets not kid ourselves here, it’s not an ordinary farmer who was killed last week. It was Eugene Terre’Blanche. The founder of a white supremist, neo-nazi, paramilitary group which attempted to disrupt our democratic process by using terrorist tactics in order to ensure that a select few remained in power at the expense of the majority, and who indoctrinated “his people” with lies about people of other races. In addition to being all these things, he was also a man who beat a security guard half to death for no reason (I would say solely because of his race, but I’ll let that one slide) and who was a notoriously hard taskmaster on his farm, who would regularly fire his farm workers for minor misdemeanours in an attempt to avoid paying them. I don’t mean to He got what was coming to him. This murder is by no means cause for concern for other farmers, for the white South African population, or for South Africans in general.

“Black” people are not going to come round to your house with a panga and chop you up… unless your doing the same things and harbour the same views as Eugene Terre’Blanche… in which case you had better get down to flight centre ASAP.

  18. Gravatar Nic Haralambous Says:

Elgar – your ignorant lack of ability to read written words is slightly laughable and somewhat embarrassing for you. I’ll quote myself back to you, read it carefully and slowly: “Once upon a time AWB political stalwart Eugène Terre’Blanche is murdered” – my reference is to ET being a once upon a time leader, not to his murder being once upon a time. Basic English. Basic stuff my friend.

  19. Gravatar Elgar Says:

If we compared our academic credentials you would instantly realise just how far off your attempt to sound condescending really is.

The way you articulated and typed your twisted thread of thought was vague enough to leave open interpretations; one of them I addressed.

But it is good to see that you actually read reactions here. I began to feel that your postings – the majority of them being quite disagreeable – were merely hit & runs by a mind gone haywire. LOL

Gus – Thanks, appreciate the comment.

  26. Gravatar colleen mulrooney Says:

Well said Nic! I agree with Siki. I think the majority of South Africans just want to get on with it and make this country work. Choosing to stay doesn’t mean sitting on your arse and doing nothing. It means getting involved in your community and taking pride in where we live.

  27. Gravatar Herman Says:

Great, you can stay here have fun when you retire, I’m confident you will be well looked after.

  28. Gravatar Adriaan Says:

    Nice post, Nic.

It’s such a cliche, but its true in this case…
the sons must pay for the sins of their fathers.

Anyways, it’s all redundant since Malema is history:

    http://www.nrvs.co.za/?p=447

  29. Gravatar Elgar Says:

    http://www.eu2hell.blogspot.com

The ANC merely gave lip service, with its lukewarm chastise of ANCYL’s Malema. While feigning condemnation the ANC immediately rationalised Malema’s outburst against a BBC journalist, yelling “bastard! little white boy! get out!”

The ANC linked the outburst with a completely unrelated incident in which a black TV station manager grabbed the arm of the AWB’s secretary general, yelling “Don’t touch me on my studio!!” eight times.

  30. Gravatar slintens Says:

Wonderful rhetoric folks. I think many ex Rhodesians also took this stand when their wiser countrymen started leaving for what was then a safer place to bring their children up in.

So lets see what you are saying here:

1.You are going to make SA a better place for all South Africans
2.You are going to stay and fight because you are not cowards

    Wonderful sentiments.

So let’s just check your thinking here because it’s really easy to sprout forth with words. It’s totally another thing to make anything happen.

    Point 1

So let see here, whites represent about 9.5% of the population.
    Coloureds and Asians about 11%.
And lets say that the new emerging black middle class represents 2% of the black populace. That gives us around 23% of the population all things being equal. In reality this figure would probably be less because these represent the full population as we know it today and we would never get a 100% representation from any one group. So lets make it about 18% to be safe – am happy to move it up or down as you think.

So 18% of South Africans, who let’s say are comfortable in South Africa and are prepared to make it a better place and are prepared to stay and fight for their creature comforts, are going to turn this place around for the 79% of the black populace where the unemployment rate is around 28%.

How are you going to create that many jobs in a time frame that will be acceptable to the people who have been promised jobs and houses etc for the last 15 years? We can see from recent unrest that they are no longer prepared to wait another 15 years and how are you going to get right what the ANC in power was not able to deliver on?

How are you going to educate that group of people to occupy meaningful jobs where they can earn the amount of money that they deem to be rightfully theirs?

    Point 2

How many of the uneducated (apartheid’s fault of course) revolutionaries who struggled against apartheid and who are totally disappointed in the current ruling party and their empty promises think the same way that us posh optimistic whites who have lived protected lives do.

When a person like the ANCYL president moves into the core party and is eligible to stand for election – who do you think these people are going to vote for?

The moderates who represent the middle class who like us drive home to posh suburbs in their BMW’s. Never – in spite of your optimism they will go the way of the revolutionary with the big promises.

Even with the emerging black middle class we will be out numbered and with political intimidation apparent in SA many of them will vote ANC anyway.

With threats like “what will happen here will make what happened in Zimbabwe look like a picnic” and a peppering of logical thinking it is perhaps clear why white South Africans might be afraid and say, “It might be time to leave this country”

You see optimism alone is not going to build a better country. And you who stand together here on a web site frequented by a majority audience of whites trying to hold forth the torch for South Africa is not going to do it either.

When you see the racist behaviour of the ANCYL president and you begin to understand his political power and support in the black community and you have even an inkling of what that could mean to white South Africa then your only options are to consider leaving.

Let’s just say we see that change here – what jobs do you think you guys will hold when a revolutionary takes over all the farms, nationalises the mines and other private concerns and rewrites the book on affirmative action because change has not happened fast enough.

Where will you be then and what will your ability be to fight? Look at the white optimists still left in Zimbabwe. What do you think their ability is to effect change in that country?

Don’t you for a moment perhaps think that you might be left in that position with all the good intentions in the world but no voice!

I am not saying any of you are wrong. I love your energy, but put forward another perspective with a little more realism than optimism because you condescend to people who think this way with malice and accuse them of being cowards.

Here’s another statistic: when Jacob Zuma ascended to the throne he promised – as the world outside was emerging from economic mayhem – to create 600,000 new jobs within a year. So far the economy lost 290,000, tendency still falling, and only 3 months left for the king to deliver.

On a recent visit to South Africa, I was very much aware of how unsafe a place it is. My family and friends there are all paranoid to a large extent, and spend their lives in a state of hyper-vigilance, stuck behind the bars on their windows and doors, not to mention electric fences, guns, and menacing dogs etc.
Let’s face it, South Africa is a war zone. You cannot argue with those crime stats. We just hope our people will die of old age, and not some horrendous death by the hands of a deranged criminal. nuff said.

  37. Gravatar Hilary Says:

    Nic,

I love you! I love that you have so perfectly articulated what I’ve been trying to in my own mind for so long.

Let’s fight for this beautiful, amazing, wonderful country. Ten years ago, I left SA to see the world. I did, and got distracted with living a life in the UK. All the time I knew I would come back. I did, at the end of last year. It was the best move we ever made.

I’ve always been a staunch defender of South Africa, never believing the sensationalist, hysterical hype surrounding the reporting. Like you, I’ve been accused of being a leftie, pinko liberal who walks through life with rose tinted glasses.

But like you, I have always believed that this place is worth fighting for. So let’s do it. Let’s fight. Let’s do whatever we can to eliminate the knee-jerk negativity and to let in the light, optimism and positivity that so many people feel…and so many want to feel but just don’t.

Thanks so much for loving SA.

    Hilary

  40. Gravatar Les Says:

I absolutely TOTALLY agree with this 100%

I simply am at a loss at the reaction we have had to the past 10 days. I mean… did I miss something??? Was there violence at the funeral or anywhere else in the country??

A much hated and much loved political figure was killed (that crime certainly is the bad bit) and yet we havent had an eruption of violence/retaliation etc etc?? Just some hot heads trying to make their voices heard!!!

Are the AWB all of a sudden a force in the country… I mean please they mostly couldnt even squeeze into their uniforms – thats how often they wear them!!! So they havent embraced the NEW SA… who cares… they are a tiny minority of a tiny minority….

Did the ANC stand up and agree with Malema about Zim or back his generally disgraceful behavior?? NO THEY DIDNT!!!

The ANC is also talking about backing away from the Power station deal…. (p.s thats good news)

I can only guess that those looking for ANY reason to leave my country will feel that they have found one?? Come on…. its been 20 years now and we still havent got the Zimbabwe that we have been promised……

STOP giving our damn (excuse me ,I too am annoyed) press (who ONLY report the negative stuff) your eyes and your ears….. sure dont ignore it, but consider too all the good news!! and the massively positive things that are happening that should make us PROUDLY SOUTH AFRICAN!!!

  41. Gravatar JC Says:

Well said, sentiment appreciated, but be careful – for a moment I heard ET himself. I have two brothers abroad, one due to work and one due to “running away”. Myself, I’m staying. However, writing and speaking about a subject still constitutes very little done. Therefore, to be able to change people from running riot you need to clean them, feed them, clothe them by giving give them an opportunity to work and to gain/regain their dignity……. thus my question, exept talking and writing (which is better than talking) about our challenges, what are YOU doing to change the situation? Two more comments, we should start praying – with the right heart; and for the gentlemen examining the use of the Queen’s tongue, I am a real Afrikaanse boerseun, so please forgive me (just teasing you). It is much less a question of black versus white – it is an issue of good versus evil, and there are both good and evil in all the colours of the rainbow.

  42. Gravatar Les Says:

Wow Stephanie… I live in Joburg and I cant even relate to how your family live…..

To those of us that LOVE SA, remember this. We can go through another 20 years of peace (no civil war as promised and predicted by so many) and this country can pull off a great WORLD CUP (which it will) and we can improve our infrastructure and grow our economy and better this country FOR ALL……

BUT we will NEVER EVER change the mind sets of expats and wanna be expats who see/say that nothing good can/will come out of this country….. even when it does… every day….

  43. Gravatar nigel Says:

To me you either do Option 2 or 3. Leaving should be a last resort, we should be more patriotic & want to live here & be prepared to stand for what is our right, but if conditions become sufficiently bad & we have no rights or these are continuously violated, then we have no choice to take option 2. Option 1 is the worst of the lot, it for people that are scared & frustrated but have no idea what to do about it or for those that are eternal pessimists. Those that routinely fantasise about emigration at every turn do not realise the incredible challenges, difficulty & uncertainty that emigrants face. Unless you are one of the few luck ones, & there are a few, emigration will be fraught with long term complications, risks & emotions, not to mention dramatic change in living standard. For a few, emigration has been fine or even great, but for most & certainly almost all the emigration wanabees that are not “uniquely skilled”, planned emigration is our of reach & not viable. Rather consider becoming a refugee, but for that things have to really get much worse & you will be here for a while, so make the most of it & try, at least to succeed & be positive. There is about 10 million non-blacks in SA + those blacks that are opposed to the current Govt, that’s more than the populations of most northern European countries, Zim had a few hundred thousand, we can make a surprisingly strong stand…My motto….plan for the best & hope the worst doesn’t matertialise.

Everyday I read in the news paper about, inocent white people being murdered by black people. In their homes, while they are steeping. And I am not a racists but it is black on white violence. People are afraid and feel powerless. They feel they are not protected by the goverment. That is why I think most of them want to leave…

  45. Gravatar Vanessa Alberts Says:

Hey Nic – what an excellent article! Thank you. You must hear the admonishments I get for being “insane” enough to be raising THREE WHITE BOYS in South Africa! My poor children!!!

The thing that I think everyone seems to forget, and the thing that I love, is that in actual fact we’re ahead of the pack and no one seems to see it. We’re dealing with issues – from racism to climate change on a level that no other country on the planet has had to yet.

South Africa is far greater than any of her politicians – she is truly “alive with possibility”. I can think of no other place on the planet I would want to raise my children in – home.

What would make a HUGE difference is if everyone (especially the half-empty types) spent their energy on actually DOING something to make a difference in their communities instead of on endless debate.

    Viva South Africa Viva!

  46. Gravatar Les Says:

Johann – you are very much mistaken…. there is MUCH black on black violence (remember xenophobia last year??)…… Dont be fooled… ALL SOUTH AFRICANS ARE VICTIMS OF CRIME!!

And Vanessa….. your comments ROCK!! with you 100%

  47. Gravatar Pramod Says:

    Hi.
Loved the article by Nic. Recently, we had an armed robbery in our house in Rivonia on a Saturday afternoon. Does this mean we should leave? Nope. We’re staying. Yes we’re more cautious now, but why make the negative issues in SA all that we focus on? You know, I support Nic… if this is ‘too rough’ a place for you – so long, cheers, don’t come back. I got robbed at gunpoint, leaving means those charlies win. No way. Side comment: don’t hate the robber, hate the idiot who is buying stolen goods at a cheap price!

As for my beloved country… I went to Soccer City on a tour. You know – I felt INTENSE pride at what we’re achieving. This world cup is an amazing opportunity, not because of the soccer (which we will love and enjoy as a spectacle) but because after every world cup in a country, it experiences phenomenal economic growth (around 30% apparently).

So for the nay-sayers that are on about how will we create jobs, there’s a starting point. There is so much natural resources, minerals, and labour-based opportunities in SA – I don’t see a problem. Don’t forget, our Telecoms environment is starting to shape up to first world standards (flame-throwers, I said ‘starting’) – it will be a little while but the improvement will be clear and tangible for all businesses.

As for ranting and raving about Malema… you know, this guy is a big mouth blathering on – because we’re all ranting and raving about this fellow. Does he have the power / authority to change the constitution (the way mad-bob does)? No. Does he have enough influence that if he got kicked out of the ANC and started a splinter group he could be the next serious political opposition to the ANC? Please… his views represent a minority of people who have not dealt with the chip on their shoulders with some polyfilla (on special at many DIY stores).
Is this Malema fellow a threat because he talks a lot of k*k and has a bad temper? Sheesh, I know a few guys like that in my office – we just ignore them. But nooooooooo, we don’t ignore Comrade Julius, we hang on every word he says.

BTW – let me share an experience with you. I don’t watch the news (at all, on any channel, ever) – but I did happen to hear on the radio about the british journo who caught some loving from bra-Jules. The way the media made it sound was that Malema was rude, abusive and pretty nasty. I decided to go hunt down the interview, watched it on Youtube. Jules wasn’t talking nonsense, he was asking why those fighting for change in zim are fighting that fight from air-conditioned offices in sandton. that’s when the completely un-necessary chirp from the journo came in – guys – he looked for it – he interrupted bra-jules and said ‘you live in sandton’. In the context of what was being said, that was clearly uncalled for, and completely irrelevant, and in my opinion deliberately insiting a response. Julius asked him to behave, but the journo’s mouth didn’t want to close, and when Julius lost his temper, I’m afraid he gave the journo a pretty good rolicking (for which, I might add, there certainly was no come back). Mr british journo got owned. He threw a stone and got a skyscraper landing on his head. oops.

In the grand scheme of things, is Malema’s acid tongue a reason to leave SA? LOL! no. If you think that, get your head examined. Is this the next Zimbabwe? No, its just not possible (by way of the structure of the constitution, the laws, and judiciary in SA).

Guys, we’re not perfect as a country. We need some work – all countries do. For example, our cricket team need some big match temperament (flame-on :P ) – we need to look at solving the drug problem here (which, if you didn’t know, is a directly correlated reason for many, many crimes). We need to focus on creating more jobs, and give the media less power to sensationalise everything.

Just remember, e-tv/sabc news, news24, naspers, the star, sunday times etc – all of them are not in existence to tell the truth. They exist to sell advertising and make a profit. And if you rush out there to buy a paper because the headline reads ‘Malema accuses british journo of having a small willy’ then you’re more idiotic than Malema.

This is the land of milk and honey, it is a country still in its infancy with more hope and potential than any other place in the entire world. We’re the strongest emerging market, we have more natural resources, brilliant people, a wonderfully diverse culture, and exceptionally beautiful landscapes.

I’ll never leave (except for a short holiday). I lived for 3 years in zim recently (consulting)… I know how bad it can get.

Nic, loved your article, loved your site – keep up the good work.

Call a spade a spade, because it is not a scalable excavation device.

  48. Gravatar Mary Says:

For those who fear for their lives and their children it is time to leave – they will have no peace if they do not leave..

Inspite of all the negatives I simply cannot give up on my country, so thank you Nic I am with you.

  49. Gravatar Tim Says:

At last, someone on the same wave length!!! Wake up South Africans, there are thousands of people who have and want to emigrate TO South Africa from UK (me include) and other parts of Europe and not because they can’t find work anywhere else, but because it is the most awesome place to live and bring up your children.

Let’s stop moaning and get on with fixing the issues!!

  50. Gravatar Steve Says:

Nic, your comments were great. Couldn’t agree more, except for one small point: “When it comes to our country, many people think it’s best to run away”. I have never ever experienced South Africans to be cowards. Compared with the rest of the world (and I’ve lived many years overseas), South Africans are serious fighters.

I think what people need is hope. Simple hope, that they can actually make a difference. (e.g. Hope that someone like Malema is swiftly and adequately dealt with and not tolerated for such a looooong time).

People only run away when they can’t cope with a situation. And in many places in this world, people DO walk away from their “husbands/wives/siblings/mothers/fathers” when they are confronted with things they don’t want to hear. The values you’re talking about are very South African still and something I can tell you that we should be very proud of!

I also believe that people need to gain some perspective. The plight of Africa is a daily reminder for many of those who have invested their lives and livelihoods in Africa and lost everything. One only has to look at the many now very poor ex-Zimbabweans who had to leave Zimbabwe when Mugabe came into power. Most of them are pensioners who invested everything they had into that country, couldn’t take it out and now have absolutely nothing, living in horrific poverty. The perspective that people need to get is that living in a democracy means being active and that by joining forces and speaking out, they can make a difference. At least now whilst South Africa is still regarded a democracy.

I am reminded of countless stories I heard from Jews who survived the holocaust. Many of them recounted stories of how they just wanted to remain positive, couldn’t believe that something like that could ever happen and ignored the developments until it was too late. They really regretted never having listened to those “prophets of doom” back then, who warned them to get out as soon as possible and that things were going to turn really ugly.

I suppose my message here is this: It is not just about having back-bone, but gaining TRUE perspective on things. It’s about being able to hold onto some form of tangible, realistic Hope. Can you (and others) really provide that?

You’ve definitely taken a good step towards contributing towards that with your website. We need more such communicative leaders. As a South African, I say to you “THANKS, NIC”!

  51. Gravatar puh...lease Says:

warm wooley feelings… I love this country, I know nothing other than this. I have a parachute provided by birth to protect my family and am waiting to long to pull the rip cord. Our police generalisimo has bastardised a campaign to collect unlicenced firearms into an effort to remove firearms from law abiding citizens in the guise of a gun free society by advertising in to white middle class media. Not getting the illegal guns off the street. Removing the defence mechanism from the attacked before removing them from the criminals… sounds like the horse before the cart to me. Jelli totsi would not be spouting if he had no knowledge of the greater plan and he would have been silenced (not just tsk tsked) earlier if the ANC was concerned about the greater good and the “feelings” of a minority. In truth we are being disarmed because of the fear of the minority saying that they have had enough. The pigs at the trough are using the whites as a scape goat and have no fear as they are supported by 38 000 000 uneducated, out of comunication, abusable, poverty struck voters who have the middle class pointed to as the cause of their woes.

Bolshevism meens a civil war of the most merciless kind between the discontented, criminal and muninous class and the law abiding, content middle class WS Churchill circa 1919

How apt to our situation 90 years on.

I am staying. I also tell my children that this is my country. My son worked in Africa for 2 years and plan to go back after his studies.
I train people in communities. Self Empowerment. And I enjoy it. Up to now I have done it for free.
They are so disadvantaged yet their positiveness and courage gives me hope.
We have a fantastic country and we can either build up or break down.
I prefer to leave a positive legacy.

  53. Gravatar Tozzi Says:

Naah, Nic, you missed the point.

Its not that people leave at every whim. The reality that there is a constant, steady and now accelerated immigration of skilled and educated individuals. This recent hype simply adds fuel to the fire.

Ask any foreigner how many relatives or friends they know affected (specifically killed) by crime and most would shrug their shoulders. Tell them that as a young, mid 20s white South African, you’ve experienced 5 first degree (of separation) crime related murders, own parents hijacked twice, sister held at gun point and numerous own encounters, and watch their expression.

Reality is: we live in a beautiful country, semi structured government, advanced banking and financial economy, sufficiently resourced country YET simply do not WANT to put up with the slow and life endangering deterioration of this society.

Soldiers go to war to fight for their country as they believe in their people and their kind. Seeing as the whites are holding the short end of the stick, how could you possibly expect (or even encourage) anybody to stay and fight?

  54. Gravatar Ryan Hermanson Says:

Nic, you are offended too easily. It is obtuse to suggest people are choosing to leave on the basis of a poorly orchestrated interview that turned into a soap opera. I would think that people would take a little more into account when making a decision like this.

Why is it that when you have a defective/poor product, supporters take so much umbrage when others don’t support it? There has been a large influx of Germans into the Helderberg region who have chosen to “desert” their home country and retire in South Africa. I am not aware of any backlash from the German Government or its people for this “unpatriotic” move.

I have lived in the USA for about 11 years. Yes, my father has been shot and had two unsuccessful hijacking experiences; my sister was mugged and I have a host of friends who have experienced numerous injustices that I do not have to worry about here. But I did not leave for this reason – even though I feel it would be justified if this was the reason.

I left as a result of pure economics and job satisfaction. After searching for a job in South Africa for 2 years and being unsuccessful (the pernicious affects of aggressive affirmative action – or possibly I was just not skilled enough)and not wanting to be a burden to my parents, I felt most fortunate that an overseas company was willing to employ me. I love my job here and I love the country.
I love South Africa too. I enjoy my trips back and when I am back I accept the situation for what it is.

I think the people you are referring to just need some tangible improvements. South Africa needs some pragmatic, erudite leaders who are able to make visible changes for the good of ALL South Africans. At the moment this is sorely missing so the Status quo remains.

  55. Gravatar Paul Aarden Says:

Personally I think everyone wants to be with you on this.
Two points come to mind though:

    1. The point of view so eloquently dealt with does still represent your own vested interest – all hail to that, nothing wrong with that. It does also, I believe, need to be recognised as just that. In a short sharp piece such as the article, in order to make you point, you obviously need to simplify matters and therein lies more than the odd problem.

    2. The SAIRR, in a recent report on the ET murder stated that a quarter of a million people had been murdered post 1994 – that is a fact that weighs heavily on our present and, as much as the positive gung-ho approach is lekker etc., no amount of rah-rah will undo the effects that lie behind such a statistic. I personally believe that this very bloody and violent fact has more to do with any decision to leave SA, be this directly or indirectly.

Accordingly I believe we need to accept that such decisions are invariably based on issues other than the ones so easily dealt with in an article. Truth will always remain stranger than fiction and wonderful as the upbeat piece is, it does, in a very real sense, have an element of fiction at its core for those who reach such a difficult point of decision.

Please accept that these comments are not meant to be personal and are merely made to highlight a point seemingly often overlooked from this particular point of view.

    Respectfully yours etc.

  56. Gravatar Sssss Says:

Absolutely. Funny enough my friends and I have been discussing the same thing… the rhetoric of ‘Is it time to leave’ is really getting boring and has no impact. Time to leave it behind or wherever it came from.

  57. Gravatar Glen Says:

This brings me to the old saying “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me”. The problem is the sticks and stones that appear after the words of political leaders who have no restrictions or accountability for what they say and do. I realise Nic, that the use of the word “fight” in your Option 3 (“You can stay and choose to fight for what you want and take ownership of your country”) may not have implied violence as an action, but nevertheless an interesting choice of word. That is all that is left for people to do in S.A… continuously fight. Fight for your freedom…fight for your human rights… fight for your life! If you complacent with always having to fight then S.A is the place for you. We all know from S.A’s history that passive resistance and negotiation never pays off but rather gets you thrown off a train (Gandhi comes to mind). You are correct in a comment to a blogger that “reaction, action and activation” are needed principals and, to solve crime, the community needs to get involved, help the police, start community watches and take ownership. The problem is that the very “words” that certain people in positions of power are using publically, and that you are dismissing as arbitrary, is potentially threatening the civil liberties and freedoms we enjoy in democracies. There is no say or involvement in police activities nor in public decision making or “ownership” in countries run by dictators or the like. “Action” and “activation” would be labled unlawful and an act of treason… and freedom of speech (including your website and blog)only a secret democratic dream. I chose option 2 and loving it! I no longer have to “fight” for the ideals enshrined in a democratic constitution… they truely are human rights not just theoretical words written on paper. Best of all I can live… not fight to live… where I am. But, my freedom is still traumatically plagued by reports from friends, family and community that, for whatever reason, chose option 1 and 3, of the indignities, dangers and fears they have to live by… week after week. This is why I still keep in touch with the news over there and get sent links like SAROCKS.COM etc. With all this said and done, even though I struggle to share in your beliefs, I do admire the positive outlook that some people have about South Africa. If there is to be change and the upholding of freedom and democracy, then it will be thanks to the actions of people like you. I would then have to apologise to you for my ignorant/pessimistic outlook for S.A’s future and graciously ask you to accept my return. But if it turns out that my pessimism was actually good foresight and a moment of realism… then I will get out my extra umbrella, shovel the snow from my sidewalk and turn on my central heating to welcome you to my new home!

  61. Gravatar Glynis Says:

Thanks so much for posting this message – I’ve been trying to think of a way to say exactly what you have said. I’m so sick and tired of people forwarding me rubbing about Malema and Zuma and about how this country sucks and us poor little white people are going to be killed, lose our homes etc etc.

I agree that it’s about time that we all grow a spine and stop taking notice of the rubbish that going around at the moment – if we all just stop forwarding the hate-speech emails, the rubbish that’s being posted on facebook etc, we can stem the tide of negativity that rushing over us all!

  62. Gravatar Coward Says:

I am stunned by the intolerant tone in Nic’s blog. Intolerance is the fundamental problem in this country. I was putting together a long response, all about the 13 black people that I personally support because the government is failing to do so; how I support myself; how I supported my parents and in-laws – when I suddenly realised that Nic’s blog, calling me a coward because I am human and afraid and sometimes exercising my democratic right to express myself in a moment of fear, is simply hate speech. More eloquent than Ju Ju, less eloquent than Eugene, but hate speech nonetheless.

I love this country; the weather, the people, the rebirth, the unfolding of events, the cultural diversity. Even if I had the education and the means I wouldn’t leave. I love the fact that the tax I pay, a third of my income, buys me the right to express my opinion. Then I read the blog and it suddenly makes me realise how intolerance can make living here suck! The exact opposite to what was intended, I think. And all because he stooped to insulting me under the guise of his loving this country!

    We live in interesting times!

  63. Gravatar Annie Says:

Hi there Nic, Great that we still have a lot of people like yourself in this country and great to be here. My daily lifestyle is wonderfull and although the political side of SA is a bit dodgy at the moment we do, us progressive people, in this country ought to stick together and make a difference. The only thing is we have those who are still so filled with hatred and want to literaly “fight” for what they want. We need to do this together with love in our hearts.

  64. Gravatar ST Says:

Nick, let’s put this into perspective. There are just far too many instances of ignorant suggestions that we should all “stand together and take ownership of our country.” The last time I looked, the government had sole control of the ownership of the country, not its ordinary citizens. Where are the government in all of this? What are they doing to convince the international media that there is nothing wrong with this country? Why do we continue to still be the most lawless society in the world? Should we just accept this, because we get no assistance from the government.
Nic, I have an open question for you….when is the government going to make a difference? Rather ask them and not the ordinary citizen who has no say.

  65. Gravatar Marylin Jordan Says:

    Dear Editor,

Your article is a good read!
We have met before and your article is as way out as was your lengthy comment made at that seminar.
You are all the things you mention in your article, with emphasis on Ignorant.
It’s easy to people moving abroad have no spine, don’t stand up for their country.
Do you realise that you are one of very few people who are doing well in SA, and it might be because you are positive etc. but we both know it’s because you were afforded opportunities most people in SA were not.
Dear Editor, why do people seek greener pastures, is it because Malema says a couple silly things, is it because ET died, if this is what you believe you are the fool. People move because they want to ensure a better life for their families. People move for job opportunities, people move cause they have lost most.
Dear editor, have you ever lost a relative or a close friend to murder? Have you had to run to your neighbour in your pyjamas to protect them from intruders, have you ever looked down the barrel of a gun, have you ever protected your family from armed intruders, have you ever done CPR for an hour on a three year old girl and have them die in your arms.
If you have dear editor, and be truthful, you will understand yet another reason why people leave a country ravaged by crime and corruption.
Yes your the ignorant fool, yes I will pray none of these things happen to you, so you can continue motivating the masses.

My 2c, I think your a fool, but a good fool.

10 year old neice = gun held to her head while her mother was raped.

I have 3 daughters and there is no way that I will risk their lives. Those of you that do are selfish.

All this crap you’re spinning, “It’s such a great country, it will get better, blah blah blah” is what they were saying in Zimbabwe years ago. And look at them now.

Go on, judge me, I dare you. Because I’m judging you – the murder and rape of your family will be on your hands.

Switch the light off when you leave

  69. Gravatar Realist Says:

What really gets to me about the question of leaving is just that, the question of leaving. We (readers) are generally not your family probably not even really your friends. We dont care whether you leave or not nor what your reasons for doing so are. We are here working as hard as we can to try and make things work. You (the ones pasting the questions all over blogs, forums and newspaper letters/sms’s) are just looking for attention and obviously gain something from moaning and whining. I dont announce to my entire neighbourhood that i feel like moving to a new one if i’m considering it.

Its a simple case if you want to be here then great. If you dont then shut-up and leave. We know there are problems and (while we are at least attempting to address them) you are quickly becoming one of them

  70. Gravatar Proudly SA Says:

Brilliant article Nic … fully support your views.

To Wake Up, I cannot imagine the pain you have and are still experiencing … and so many other that have similar and worse experiences. Some of them decided to leave, others stayed.

People have fought for the liberation of our country for decades. Fathers, mothers, sons, daugthers, brothers, sisters … they continued to fight for that day through all the hardship and pain due to the loss of a dear family member (killed during the war, murdered by the old SAP, etc.) Some of these people never had the opportunity to get closer as their loved ones just “disappeared”.

My view is that if we leave the country, we concede defeat to the negative elements in our country, e.g. murder, corruption, rape, etc.

By staying in the country, I will “fight” these elements

  72. Gravatar Anonymous Says:

I think you’re an idiot, but that’s just my thoughts :-) What you’re not taking into consideration is that some people have wives and kids that are in constant danger, EVERYDAY! In SA the chances of a woman getting raped are bigger than the chances of her learning to read. There are a lot more stats like this that simply shows that, even though this is a great country, it is not as simple as staying and fighting when you have the lives of other people depending on you and the choices you make. I’m not sure about you, but if I had to get home to the scene of my wife/daughter and even grandmother being raped and brutalized, then I would never be able to forgive myself. I can tell you honestly that I would rather take it onto myself to protect my family against these kinds of odds by leaving than “staying to fight for what is right”. Believe me, I’m a fighter, but in all my fights I only have to think of myself. But when it comes to the odds including family… The end game and stakes changes to a very large degree. I could of course send them to a different country and stay and “fight” as you say, but who will be there for them and who will make sure that they have what they need.

If this country could at the very least give me a competent police force I could rely on and the right to protect my family at all odds as well as a fair and non-racist chance to make a living for my family, then sure I would stay. As a white South African though, neither myself nor my family have that chance and the rate at which the people (All races) of this country are being killed and brutalized are simply to big for me to say that my family is safe. So, that leaves me with one option and that is to leave.

  73. Gravatar Sue Says:

Well said Nic – when are we going to become part of the solution instead of part of the problem? During the darkest times of Apartheid, women in Soweto got together to sew items which an Englishwoman promoted and sold for them at exhibitions in the UK. The group took a bold decision to ban political discussion, whining and negativity during their sewing sessions and nicknamed themselves “the stop moaning club”. It is time we started a “stop Moaning Club” for all South African’s to join – each member needs to try and write something positive about the country at least once a week. Mine for this week – I love way Cosmos fringes the edge of our roads and summer!

  74. Gravatar ST Says:

@ Sue – now that is all a bit confusing. Please, please give us tips on how to become “part of the solution.” What exactly do you mean? Are you implying we should “stop moaning” and just accept everything the way it is?
Reading the responses here, ‘Wake Up’ and ‘Charles’ are about the only real, factual, responses. All other responses are a bit “pie-in-the-sky” with some hope that everything will just fall into place.

The results are immediate! Firstly a smile (x2 actually), a warm feel-good fuzzy feeling (x2 actually), a happier disposition (x2 actually), a long-lasting feeling of significance (x2 actually), a lifetime feeling of deep satisfaction and contentment (x2 actually).

I take my Vaccine everyday and I seldom feel DOM! To make a small, positive difference each day in SA (where the Vaccine is needed) makes me a much happier person. If I was to go to Austragolipalia (where the Vaccine is really not needed) I would be wasted.

The SA govt sucks big time , so does home affairs,so does getting your license, my rates account is never fixed, corruption everywhere. Crime but not just petty crime, I know so many people murdered, hijacked, raped and personally have experienced this. Give us a good reason to return to our fantastic country SA? Talk it up nice as you want. It is currently a shithole… and we do not just leave because of crime… really so much is wrong… are you all so blind that you cannot see..stop pretending huggy kissy that it is all a ok. it is not… live in another country and see for yourself. If you have children you have to do the best you can if you can leave…please before your daughter gets raped or your son gets murdered or hijacked…it will NOT get better as people are coming into SA in droves…poor uneducated..People of SA need to say STOP we will not pay our rates or taxes unless the govt gets rid of all the corruption, Malema, fix the depts. so that they all work..C’mon you will see Zim is coming sooner than you think

  81. Gravatar Nikki Says:

Good one Nic… but I have my doubts. We can fight back but are we enough to do so?? And will it really help in the end when someone like Julius Malema becomes President of SA (and this is probably what is going to happen). I’ve been a victim of crime more than once but I’ve remained positive all these years, but I will NEVER stay in SA with Malema as President and I don’t think it’s a good idea to wait and hope that doesn’t happen. I know Zimbabweans who certainly believes that SA is already heading the same way as Zimbabwe!

To all you negative ones out there……

I am tired of all these pretenders, bugger off to where you came from.Go back to the UK/Australia/US ….wherever it is you came from and help the lazy people living on government aid to never get a JOB. We dont need two faced citizens ontop of everything else going on.:)

  84. Gravatar Mthoko Says:

As someone living in South Africa but originally from Zimbabwe, it saddens me to see a repeat of what I saw happen back home. I have spoken to some denialists who say that the Zim situation will never be repeated in South Africa but take it from me if the current flow of events prevails, it will be repeated. Leaving the country is an option for many but what I know is that one will always meet up with new challenges where on goes. It all depends on what you left the country for and whether that particular challenge is not as much of a challenge in your adoptive home.

  85. Gravatar ST Says:

@ Kirsty – if you want to make general statements about what goes on in the rest of the world (overseas, as you state), rather save some face and support your statements with substantiated and factual figures. By the way, we are not discussing the rest of the world…we are discussing South Africa.
Your statement “bugger off to where you came from” makes no sense at all.
Just an opinion which I believe I am entitled to. (Note the capial letters for ‘I’)

  86. Gravatar cori Says:

Bugger off where you came from you are very misinformed. SA is a crime infested corrupt place and I know I left SA. Rubbish about it being like this overseas lies. Overseas is not perfect but way better. Zim is coming just be prepared

  87. Gravatar seve Says:

Nic, I would like you to be more realistic on choice 3. What power have you got to fight and get heard in RSA? A vote? Absolutely not:
I think you shall consider marry one of Zuma’s daughters to acheive something!

  88. Gravatar alloytoo Says:

Firstly the people who are leaving SA now, stayed in ’94, they tried to make it work for 15 years.

This has been noticed by their new neighbors. An immigration doctor in Auckland mentioned that 15 years ago his patients were loud raciest Afrikaners, and that today they were generally moderates seeking better lives for their families.

A mental health worker in Hamilton observed that the current wave of immigrants were far more “Damaged” that those that came before.

Immigration is not something you decide to do next weekend, it’s an arduous 2-3 years of cautious planning, it requires commitment and mental stamina, and a fortitude to stay the course.

It’s a careful and considered exodus by those with the skills and resources to do so. Skills especially that are difficult to replace.

  89. Gravatar Tired of this nonsense Says:

Oh really. So all the people that have lived in this violence for the last 15 years have their head up their butts? I have many friends and not one has been left unaffected by violence and crime? Is this the sweet 15 years you have been talking about.

You, my dear sir, are an ignorant fool.

  90. Gravatar Alpha Mike Says:

It is frightening to see how many naive ostriches there are on here. Im starting to think that this detachment from reality of epic proportions is more dangerous than the crime rate…

I would find this whole idea of ‘writing something positive each day’ and ‘smile at a person in the street’ and ‘fight for what you want and take ownership of your country’ funny if it wasnt so ridiculous. God, are you listening to yourselves? Are you all on happy pills or just plain blind?

The situation in SA is deadly serious. Crime, radical black politics, corruption, cronyism and the list goes on. Do blacks suffer? Of course. Should farm murders be bundled together with the other stats? NO! Will Civil War and or Zim/Sudan/Rwanda/Yugoslavia 2.0 materialise here? Very big risk but you just keep smiling at each other and it will all go away.

  91. Gravatar So what are you really doing? Says:

As an ex-South African living overseas I find this article offensive. Nic has a very narrow perspective and has, obviously, no understanding or respect for what families dealing with murdered loved ones actually go through.

My question to all those shouting “Amen Nic” is what are you actually doing to make SA any better? It is easy to write about wonderful SA, and all the other nonsense being spouted, but very few people have anything real to add about a solution. Good on you for being positive about your country but how many are actually out there helping others and making a REAL difference? While I lived in SA I volunteered at an AIDS orphanage – funny we couldn’t find anybody to help or volunteer. Seems to me, like so much in SA, it is too much effort to do anything real. Rather sit in the comfort of your alarmed, burglar guarded, electric fenced home and write (or comment on) a blog. Hope it helps you sleep at night, but bet it won’t stop the wondering and panic at every little noise….

  92. Gravatar Daniel Says:

Whilst Nic has demonstrated the obvious issues that South Africans black, white, coloured and indian continue to deliberately misconsture to serve the purpose of leaving, it becomes very upsetting to read comments by people like Minnar and Slinters who refuses to accept that the problems in South Africa cannot be wished away but should be confronted head on. Also the fact that there is growing misconception that crime in SA is directed at the white man by a black, we need to deal with these misconceptions and start building a united moral platform that which will define our national standing. It is very worrying that whilst the majority of people fleeing the country have legitimate reasons to, they also carry with them the burdens of South Africa to their new environments which leads to the never ending negative comments about the country internationally. We have crime, cant it happen that as a country we sit up and owned up to this crime so as to defeat it, rather than make it a black on white problem. For years white south africa owned up to the most atrocious systeme of goivernment one that denied that state sponsored crime was a reality of daily living but also refused to deal with social crime one that has manifested itself into the modern day democracy. But we cannot continue to blame those years for the actual happenings of today, what is happening in our country is sad but is also the reality of so many societal factors that can be blamed on any government by anyone opposed to the current day government, but the reality is that, the state capacity to deal with many social ills is hampered by societies acceptance of the vile, ill and bigot that is strewn upon us by foreign media not to mention our own media which to date reports crime with factual inaccuracies that leads people like Minnar to conclude that a genocide of the farmers is coming. the continued misreporting of crime affecting and afflicting communities in traditionally black communities is simply atrocious. But one thing is for sure, Nic youn have helped SA to start talking

  93. Gravatar Daniel Says:

Funny enough people seem to think that the ANC cant be defeated at the polls, all what South Africa needs is a new committment not from the DA, Cope and ID but a party with no aparthed or liberation baggage, there is a loud outcry for political leadership and only those that know multiracialism can triumph where the ANC, DA and others failed, the reality is you negative lot want the country to blow in flames, why, because u dont want change, do you ever consider the multitudes of ordianry people in your bad wishes, those that have reared you and your children to what you and them are, i mean the ordinary women who washed your clothes and you paid her nothing to help her builkd a future fo herself and the children, u now want her to relegated to refugee status where? some white south african are silly in their intoxicated bile

Julius is a typical wright winger that you find in most western countries and does not represent main stream politics and I believe we need to realise that.

My wish is that everyone in this country must realise that we can never achieve our goal of rainbow nation with rampant inequality, you can have a million policemen policing every street in the country but an empty stomach knows no laws and it definetely does not care about rainbow nation.

I love all these positive attitudes on this site, my plea is that let us take it further and think out of the box about ways to solve the source of crime, not continue treating the symptons.

    Hey Nic,
great article. I truly wish i had your ability to comment on some of the responses i have read.
For all of you who have lost someone close to you i am truly sorry.
Yes i am at liberty to do so as i can honestly say i have been a part of most of those “crimes” we so fear that make us want to leave our country.
I have looked down the wrong end of a 9mm, lost people close to me due to oportunistic thuggery, have left the safety of my home and family on more than one occasion to help someone in need, have had a rib or two broken, i have been robbed had cars stollen etc etc etc. I have NEVER thought of leaving South Africa, i could afford to but this is my HOME. The reason we live should be because we believe we can make a difference in our World, wherever it might be.

I am a 1960′s vintage so i have done pre 94 and post 94. In both eras fear and uncertainty prevailed and dont fool yourselves people of all races, colors and cultures have the same desire as you do to protect their loved ones.
The question we need to ask ourselves, wherever you are.
HOW CAN I MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
It starts with each of us in that part of the World that is important to us. It is incredible to me that so many young men and woman like yourselves care enough to go out of your way to be heard. YOU GUYS ROCK (yes you older ones to)

Hi all, very interesting article. I am originally from Zim and have spent 5 years in the USA, 7 in Holland and about 10 in the UK, I am an engineering contractor so it is easy for me to travel. My heart goes out to all those who have suffered at the hand of violence but many comments on this site are correct, you must stay and believe in a better tomorrow. I know that it is easy to say but I have seen much sadness in these so called safe countries, so much so that people take their own lives at an unbelievable rate and just as bad, many people, no matter where you go, just seem to be marking time. A major part of the problem is that there are very few fresh ideas, there are many ways progress can happen, take a look at my sites, http://www.zimlra.com and http://www.communityconstructionproject.com .I have tried to make a new life in these countries but the pull on my heart cannot be ignored any longer, yes I may be foolish but just as a whale beaches itself so I must return. My mother was from SA and I did a lot of growing up in Cape Town and JHB, I wish peace for us all.

  102. Gravatar Liezl Says:

I love this country and would like to stay. However you must ask when is enough, enough. This past 2 weeks I have been robbed two times, I lost my dog (he was like a child to me) because of crime. The Police can do nothing and just make jokes about crime when they come to take necessary statements, for insurance purposes, and not to solve the crime itself. I am “gatvol”, I work hard to make this country a better place, but there is a minority that is pulling this country down, Criminals. I should also mention that I have also been robbed two times in the previous year. I think everybody’s situation is unique and no one should judge somebody that wants to leave this lawless country.

  103. Gravatar Bob Says:

Yeah that’s funny. You can’t fight for anything if you don’t have a leg to stand on. I like the whole hero attitude to stay and fight, it’s very noble but sometimes instead of getting completely technical you should look at the facts. I think your bravado is clouding your judgement a little here.

Fact #1. The country is run by idiots who couldn’t give less of a sh!t how we feel or what we try to do about it. Any gripes we have get laughed at and met with insults / more stupidity. There simply is not enough brain power throughout the country to make the necessary changes.

Fact #2. No the grass may not be much greener in other places, but it is greener. You wanna stay here as the country gets run to the ground or untill someone in your family becomes another tragic statistic in this country? Be my guest, doesn’t seem like a great idea to me.

Fact #3. The country hasen’t taken a single step forward since it’s ‘transition’. Crime runs rampant, people die. Folks overseas are somewhat shocked if someone in their nabourhood peels over. Not here, this is an every day occurance. When last did a day go by when you didn’t hear about someone being murdered? I drive past at least one accident a week, the country is a mess. Just because the area you live in may not have been hit as bad as others just yet doesn’t mean things are peachy, but don’t worry it’s coming.

Unless some really drastic changes are made in this country, there is no light at the end of the tunnel. One has to ask how long before it reaches a state from which it cannot recover, at least not for a very long time. You can’t keep making something sicker and fix it in a day. These things tend to pick up momentum untill it completely falls off the cliff.

Some of us would like to get out before that happens in the hopes for a somewhat decent future. Some at least like to fantasize at the thought of getting out but in reality it’s not as easy as picking up and leaving tomorrow. People have families to think about, people who they would have to leave behind and it’s not a nice thought.

I love the land, best country and climate in the world. Unfortunately we are vastly outnumbered by idiots. There comes a time where you gotta suck up your pride, admit defeat and leave it to the dogs. At least that is my perception.

You aren’t going to change anyones minds with this type of dribble and I don’t see where you get the cheak to try. You wanna go down with the ship? Good for you, enjoy it. I’ll rather go contribute to a society that at least works to an extent, they may all be corrupt but some at least have the brain power to not lead their country to oblivion.

  104. Gravatar Nic Haralambous Says:

    Hey Bob,

Thanks for your response. I see your point, to a degree. However your response does exactly what you say I am guilty of; who are you to tell me that I am wrong? How can you make sweeping statements that are unsubstantiated, such as: “The country hasen’t taken a single step forward since it’s ‘transition’.” That’s ignorant. You don’t know the statistics, I do. Jobs have been created, we’re dealing with the economic recession effectively, we have a budget surplus available to assist in dealing with issues that we are facing. Doctors are being brought in to SA to assist in helping those who need it. The “facts” as you label them are biased from where you sit. You aren’t seeing facts the way that I see them (as I am not seeing facts the way you see them). Which means we’re not actually discussing fact, we’re discussing your emotive reasons for wanting to leave SA. And if your reasons are emotive then you should leave and be happy with that decision, I wont hold it against you for long!

I’m by no means saying that there are no problems, in fact I acknowledge that there are very serious and very real problems that exist in our country. But my argument here revolves around attempting to solve these problems, not running away from them, not pointing fingers at the “dogs” in the country as you so eloquently put it. What’s your solution? What have you done in your entire life in SA that has helped the country, and not you? What have I done? your Neighbour? We’re all responsible for the outcome of our country, not just the government.

That’s all I’m saying; take ownership of the problems you hate so much, don’t bribe cops and expect that same cop to stop a murder. Don’t drink and drive and get away with it and then get irritated when a robber get’s away with a banks money. That’s double standards. Don’t love this country but cry helplessness when presented with a solution that requires effort on your part.

Wake up and smell the responsibility. It’s yours and it’s mine and it’s all of ours I’m afraid.

  105. Gravatar Bob Says:

    Hey Nic

Yes you make some good points but I can’t help but feel you’re a little to optomistic here.

Firstly the reason I say you are wrong. I’m not telling you or anyone else to leave. I am one of those who wish to get out and make a better life for myself. You cannot judge those who do or toy with the fantasy of it. In your 3 possible outcomes you basicly lable people as cowards / making a decision that you can respect or throwing in the towel at the first sign of discomfort. That too is ignorance because life isn’t so black and white, there are many factors that contribute to the way people react.

You can’t say that people don’t have valid reasons to threaten to leave, leave and / or give up. And here’s why. Without getting too technical because I’m not a polititian and studying statistics generally makes me more discontent rather than puts me at ease. Correct me if I’m wrong but the ANC got 60 odd percent of the vote in the last election? That to me is proof enough that 60% of the nation doesn’t have a clue. Simply because they can’t see that the ANC fulfilled its purpose years ago. They sucked up their pride and under the command of Mr. Nelson Mandela tried to move the nation forward as a whole. They made a few mistakes but the intent was good. But as with any government the world over if they remain in power too long then power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. That saying is all too true and unfortunately all they have to do is spread mindless propoganda to that 60% to remain in power, that 60 odd % likely comprises of people in the rural areas who are unable to grasp the bigger picture. Next election they may get less votes again but I’m pretty sure they will come out ontop at least another once or possibly twice. That’s a long time for a sick government to do alot of damage. The white population is around the 4 million mark and without knowing statistics that probably means we’re outnumbered at least 10-1.

So why do people really want to leave?

Well lets start with Telkom. When it was privatised it did very well (as did eskom etc) now the government owns 45% of it, charges us through the nose and cripples the countries ability to move into the modern world. My friend overseas pays roughly R120 for an uncapped connection 6 times faster than mine (and that’s just on paper, never mind seeing what the actual download / upload rate compares) while I pay around 2 grand a month. Imagine how many people could get educated with fast and affordable internet access? Something that should be fairly simple to attain in this day and age, especially for schools etc. Not only that but I remember a couple of years back they layed off some 60 000 employees? That year Helkom reported them to make some 6.7 billion rand. I don’t know all the exact details but from what I can gather they just shafted thousands of people to make some cash.

Next we have Eskom. We had world class power. Everyone wanted what we had and we were at the top of our game. The ANC got a stake in Eskom and as such decided to make a few bucks here and there by laying off maintenance teams. The reason we’re in the state we’re in at the moment is because nothing was maintained. But oh well their bad right? Let’s just hike up electricity prices through the roof so that the people can pay for it.

Next our steel mines. Yeah sold off to overseas corperations, now we ship steel to Japan, they process it and we buy it back off them. Great move, make a few bucks here and lose millions in the long run.

Crime. Do you honestly think it’s in the governments best personal interests to actually stop it? Everything that gets stolen or broken and replaced gets a nice markup of VAT on it. That adds up to quite a bit. Not to mention what people spend on walls, dogs (them pooches gotta be fed), electric fences, you name it. Your car gets stolen, you buy a new one, 14% of it goes to the government. The amount of hard earned money you work for that gets thrown back into the governments pocket is sickening for anyone who makes an effort to get somewhere in life. My dad has always been a hard worker, he works himself to the bone. My folks are brittish! We only came here a couple of years before Apartheid left. Now my dad who has been an extremely hard worker for years and build his business from the ground up must hand it over for nothing or suffer the consiquences. Isn’t it great to recieve something by default rather than actually *gasp* work for it?

Our police force. We had well trained cops, government cut funding, they left for private security groups. Now we got the rookies running around trying to learn how to maintain order.

Rascism. Yeah, the majority of the blacks aren’t innocent. Look at the Springboks. I read a fascinating article about how the Springbok emblem actually came from the Springbok Legion. Apparently they spoke out against rascism back in the day. The one thing we have to be proud about is our accomplishments in rugby, I’m not a die hard fan like some of the other guys here but winning the world cup again was a proud moment to be a South African, it gave you a feeling of ‘maybe things aren’t so bad’. But no these idiots have to make it political and instead of just allowing a nation to be proud of it’s accomplishment they throw wild idiotic accusations and change the name. A name is just a name but the fact that they do that purely to rub it in the white mans nose really grates my nuts. Why have we not started referring to bafana bafana as the Proteas? You wanna talk about double standards?

Then we have an idiot like Julius Malema. An outright rascist, a moron, a biggot and protected by the government. So he gets told to appologise woohoo. This sack of scum should have been thrown out ages ago. Maybe then it would be some sort of assurance that they actually do care about fixing the country. The point is we already deal with the stupidity and corruption then along comes this clown and adds some insult to injury. So yeah emotion comes into play.

I could go on all day giving 1000 examples of stupidity at it’s finest but I’m sure you see where I’m going with this. It’s too much for some people to handle. There’s some positive things that happen as you say and I know that only bad news makes good news but at the end of the day why do I want to live here? Where if the kak really hits the fan me and my entire family will be out on the street, when I could live somewhere else where if the kak hits the fan I get my own house and some spending money, without some moron spitting at me while his idiot government leads the country into hell.

Not only that but I won’t have to worry about my girlfriend going out after 6pm. I won’t have to buy trackers for our cars, or burglar bars or bullet proof window tints. I may not have the fancy vocabulary, or the great knowledge of statistics and good news that occasionally comes our way. But I know enough to know that I should expect more.

You say it takes people to do their part? I have done my part. I work as a buyer and a draftsman for an electrical contractors, not a polotician. I voted, I don’t go out of my way to cause issues with people, hell a little while ago a concrete dustbin had fallen over in the road and my friend and I stopped to pick it up and move it out the way. And yeah I’m not perfect, I’ve done my share of stupid things – as most human beings do. I don’t fund crime as you put it though. Bottom line is, I’ve done what I can as a citizen to contribute to a society. If you want to be the hero that’s your choice, you are perfectly entitled to. Just remember some of us are not. Some of us just try to be good people, contribute to society and live out our lives. Since this place is being flushed down the toilet we’d rather go find somewhere better.

You aren’t going to change anything soon I can assure you. Thinking you will is pipe dreams at best. Too many uneducated, too many that refuse to act on common sense rather than impulse.

I wish you luck though. If you manage to fix it I’d love to come back and contribute to this society once again. I can’t say I’ll regret leaving if you don’t though.

  106. Gravatar Bob Says:

PS. I forgot to add yesterday. One of the main things that holds this country back is the fact that black people still today seek retribution.

There is no need to change the rugby teams name, or street names, or airport names. They should serve as a reminder of the countries history and what has been accomplished and how far we have come. Instead a large majority of the black people would like to erase the white history and presence in the land. They change names to rub it in our noses but while doing so they stir up the water to make it murky again. This builds resentment. It causes them to take whatever they can get, some by almost any means and it causes the white folks to get extremely bitter.

The better solution would have been to name new developments after their historic figures. Ofcourse it doesn’t matter if I try to reason it or come up with a more logical solution. It doesn’t matter even if you agreed with me. We don’t have a voice and I’d be suprised if they can tell what a voice of reason even is.

The leaders of this country should be the diplomatic voice of reason, to come to a solution in which all parties win but that is not the case. They support immaturity and do more than enough to keep rascism and resentment alive, instead of moving on into the future. They will rather disagree simply because it was a white persons suggestion and at any given opportunity they will throw anything back into the white mans face instead of looking on at least one bright side. That side is we brought them into the modern age. Many wars have been fought throughout history. Many whites have killed eachother, generally the more advanced nation surviving. It is only the black man that seeks retribution for the rest of eternity. The world is a tough place and it’s too bad they don’t come to terms with that. It’s that stupidity and pettiness that stops any black nation being truely successful in context with the rest of the world.

By saying this I’m not trying to establish ‘white power’ or some such nonsense but the fact is, some of them are great people with the right idea. I’m very interested in astronomy and one of the best professors I’ve seen is a black man. BUT the majority of them act on impulse without thinking of the bigger picture. As a personal opinion that to me seems genetic because it’s no different in america. Whites are not innocent but we have come from a long history of war, the difference is we had created advanced civilizations when they were not able to. Maybe that was down to luck?

Funny thing is the blacks here whiped out the aboriginal people. I’m a bit fuzzy on history but I know they whiped out the little bushmen. Why are they not made to pay retribution? What makes them so rightious? Doesn’t matter because that is one of the miscarriages of justice that will be forgotten. At least we did not kill their people off completely and at least they were brought into the modern age of civilization, medicine and better understanding.

I still find it funny how some of them say at least during apartheid they had work. Better to work for peanuts than have no work at all and resort to brutal crime?

Regardless it doesn’t matter how you analyse or rationlize it. It will fall on deaf ears because those in power today cannot see beyond their own noses and remain in power.

Yes, it is time to leave RSA.

Do it and do it soon. Please, it is for your own good

  108. Gravatar NIck Says:

    &Nic

Mate, let’s hear your plan how to fix RSA. And please stop with the fluffy stuff huging trees. Being positive is not going to change anything. Want proof: since 1994 the ANC instilled hope and positive messages to the majority of people. Has this made a difference. NO.

Before you get on your high horse about this (we all know that RSA has just been going down the tubes since 94) give us the stats that you claim to have that says the opposite. Come on, you posted here that yiu do have this. So show us. The fact is that you can not. And the irony is that if you could and if indeed it was true then your site would not exist now would it. And also if these stats existed then surely you would proof that just being positive would save this RSA. So mate, come on, put your money where your mouth is.

Failing this, let’s hear yiur plan. Give us a concrete plan. No fluff, noi bull, just detail it.

Also, answer Bob’s last post. Let’s see if you have an answer that makes sense.

Why do you refuse to take my offer about your EU passport. What are you so afraid off. You call yourelf a South African, but I doubt you are. It seems to me ghat you are the point 3 Coward that you refer to. The people that left RSA are the braves ones. Yes, we have the courage to leave, to rake the risk, to do something, to take a stand, to lead by example, to clear the way fir you poor ignorant people that do not know that the pot is boiling and that you are slowly cooking to death.

Come on Nic, come out of hiding. Let’s see what you are made off. Answer my post point by point. Be a man and stop being an ignorant fool.

God bless you, you’re so ignorant it is actually funny.

  109. Gravatar Ed Says:

I’m a white male, age 26. I’ve always lived in the middle-to-upper class suburbs, Johannesburg.

    let me sum-up:

This is me at age 10:
    - Playing in the streets & in my front yard,
    - Walking to the store & friend’s house,
    - Crime was a myth, it only existed in movies,
    - Small waist-high fence around my house, single front door.
    - The world was a fun place.

This is me at age 20:
    - Grandparents both murdered in their homes,
    - My first car was stolen from my secure car-port,
    - I was almost hijacked on 3 occasions in my second vehicle,
    - I’ve been at gun-point twice,
    - I don’t go anywhere without sending at least two family members an SMS to my whereabouts,
    - Riddled with fear & worry about my life,
    - 6-foot high walls around my house, electric fence and security bars on everything. 2 security gates, and bolted front door.

I’ve been living in the United Stated of America for the past year, I now have my Green Card.

I now have no fence around my house, not ever bars on the windows. I have left my car unlocked in the middle of the city, it was in the same spot when I returned hours later. I park it every night in the street, and no, I don’t even have a car-alarm installed. I’ve not met a single person who has lost a family member to crime or violence. It’s as though I’ve gone back in time to when I was 10. And you guessed wrong again, I’m living in roughly the same middle-class neighborhood environment, in one of the worst States in America as far as crime goes. One year of crime in my State does not even come close to horrors of one day in South Africa, Johannesburg.

I’m NEVER COMING BACK TO SOUTH AFRICA, I’d rather go to HELL – it’s SAFER!

My only regret is not having the money right now to have my whole family come and live here, away form the horrors of Africa. I feel so guilty it’s beyond words – the guilt that I have such a good life now!

  110. Gravatar NIck Says:

    >>> Ed,

    Good on you mate!

Yep, a 1st world and 3rd world is significantly different.

Lol, Greece has gone belly-up. Nic’s passport is with nothing.

  111. Gravatar Craig Says:

Unfortunately the majority of the SA white population have made the same mistake as the Zimbabwean whites did. When I was in Zim in 97 just before the collapse, I could not believe what I was seeing, the whites had not made any attempt to integrate into the new society and this was 17 years after independence. They were still running around like they were the chosen ones and when I pointed this out to a number of friends I was ridiculed, the rest is history. Bob made some excellent points in his posts, the problem is that the good people do not get together. It is going to take a huge amount of work but it is possible, neighborhood watches and the like must be formed on a professional level. People have to start helping each other, there is no other way. Admittedly it will be very difficult in SA as it is one of the most selfish societies you will ever come across.

  112. Gravatar NIck Says:

    Well said Craig.
Bug why bother. The writing is on the wall. The issues in RSA are too deeply ingrained.

I honestly think that there are no easy solution to the problems. RSA people are way to self centered. It so typical Africa – every man for himself and Nic hugging trees.

I think the solution is just to leave. Nobody ever mentions the Bushmen and the Hottentot. It is their country and the whites and blacks should leave and give it back. Talk about the forgotton genocide.

Has any one got the latest stats on the mass exodus out of RSA. Would be interesting to see how much this is accellarating.

  113. Gravatar Craig Says:

Nick having seen the recent 20 000 police officers in jail article and the level of brutality committed during what should be non violent crimes, you are probably right. I am coming to the conclusion that unless there is a huge input from the very top, army on the street, 10 year minimum sentences for police officers no matter how petty the crime and things like that the place is doomed. Once the police stoop to the level they have there can be no hope, in Zimbabwe now a police officer can walk up to you and demand $20 for going through a nonexistent red light, not many can afford to give away $60 a day for nothing. What happens when you really need them, but saying that it might just be the natural course of things, after 50 years 60% of the population die off due to crime, disease and incompetence and then the call for help goes out and it starts allover again.

  114. Gravatar Nick Says:

Yep Craig. Seems like RSA has some real issues. What do you think will solve this? Maybe hugging a tree…

  115. Gravatar Katie Says:

Mom murdered, brother murdered, now just dad and me. We left so that we would not loose each other

    I still can’t sleep.

    Katie, age 12

  116. Gravatar Ed Says:

I’m so sorry to hear your story Katie. It’s unimaginable.

Like you, I left South Africa.
I recently found out that I almost lost my whole family in a hijacking. My sister, mom and dad were all in the same car.

I’m pleading with them to leave South Africa, I hope they do what your dad and you did.

  117. Gravatar Afrikaans Says:

Bob you make good points. But i think the main problem is white vs black. The bushmen who lived in south africa faced a genocide by other black ethnic groups “bantus”… they choose to ignore it, which is just as bad. But their justification is that it was tribal differences… whereas white south africans are europeans who took their land, forced them in to slavery, undermined them and killed many of them. Genocide has always existed, even in europe before we arrived where we are, we faced thousands of years of new eras and empires and genocide. Whereas Bantus and Bushmen at the end of the day are still black men, and africans. I wish we could all live as one.. peace and unity.. but i see how that may be improbable if not impossible… it has only been 15 years since the end of apartheid… after years of mistreatment it is a bit hard to ask for them to be the bigger person and forgive and forget… when looking at european history we did not prove to be as generous when it came to OUR wars. I am not surprised this is happening, I think they are handling this the wrong way, but i am not surprised this day has come. I will forever love south africa but my well fare is far more important and so is my family’s.

  118. Gravatar Claire Says:

Hey, listen everyone – I’ve been there and done that, well actually I am in the process. We left South Africa in January 2009 and moved to Perth… not because we had intended on intentionally leaving SA, but my husband was offered a transfer. At first we were hesitant but thought, hey, we’re young lets give it a go and see what happens. Now, let me tell you, Perth is a beautiful place, beaches, rivers winding through the suburbs, great transport, clean, safe etc etc. We have been here now for almost 2 years and my husband was asked to renew his contract on a permanent level. We decided to go back to SA instead. So now we can confidently say we actually took the plunge, walked the walk and at the end of the day, SA rocks. So this message goes out to anyone who is considering leaving SA – suck it up, stop complaining and stay positive, because it is true – you don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone and we are so happy to be coming home to our family and the wonderful, happy, friendly rainbow of people that make up our beautiful nation!

  119. Gravatar Yackety Yack Says:

Kudos to everyone who has left SA and I wish you guys all the best. It takes balls to leave and not to come back. Or you can come back because nowadays we have aeroplanes! I’m getting ready to leave with my family next year. In the end we are all South Africans (a very special breed) and whether you go or stay it is a very personal choice. Don’t be bitter/ a hater because you left or stayed. Make your choice and accept (not criticise) other’s choices. We all do what we think is best for us. Only your opinion and life experience matters and you should not care what others think. And obviously it won’t be the same overseas as in SA because, well in all fairness, it is another country, innit? So expect a change. Kudos for those staying behind. Fight the good fight for all of us who are leaving. We love you guys and SA! And when you have fixed all the problems in SA we will come back with our new skills, experience and investments and have a reunion. Hahaha! Is that what y’all are upset/angry about? Don’t be so uptight. All over the world, including the US, UK, NZ, Oz, some people actually leave their countries of birth for economic or social reasons! Wow! I know! This is too much of an amazingly progressive concept to fathom! To actually leave one’s country of birth! (Thank you Jan van Riebeeck and the Dutch sailors and the English missionaries and some Jews from Europe and a German, a Chinese and a Scot here and there for leaving your countries of birth for SA so that I may one day live) So why make such an issue of it in SA? Why label people that leave cowards, etc.? These other countries actually have blogs and forums supporting and giving advise to their expats. C’mon let’s spread the love and acceptance. I have faith in you guys staying behind and I fully entrust this beautiful country in your capable hands and I expect it in good condition if I return (the world is a big place)! I love you all, you silly South Africans, you! Go my beauties! Go and travel and see the world! It is your right and there for you!

  120. Gravatar Yackety Yack Says:

Oh, to answer your question… Sorry I have yacked and blabbed only slightly off topic…

Question: Is it time to leave SA?

Answer: If you have to ask, well then, yes it is time. If the thought has crossed your mind then obviously your soul needs change. Confusion said that only change is constant. Life is all about change. Don’t stagnate. Be a rolling stone. Just change your mindset and the way you approach the change. Change with an open heart and embrace it. On the other hand travel isn’t for everyone.

  121. Gravatar Yackety Yack Says:

Oh, shoot! I forgot to give you some advise on that bee (BEE?) problem in your shoe. Well sweetie, I wouldn’t just sit with it in the shoe. I’d leave the darn old shoe! Just take it off and leave it… Plenty more shoes out there without bee(s) (No use scratching around for the bee and getting stung on the hand!)
