Google maps recently launched in South Africa (recently as in yesterday). So I had an idea that we should try to plot a map group of the most rocking things to do, places to go, see and visit in South Africa for tourists and locals alike to check out.
So my request is simple. If you want to assist me in building the South Africa Rocks Google Map then leave a comment below and I’ll drop you a collaboration invite and you can tell the world about your favourite spots in SA!
Some thoughts about what to tag:
Restaurants
Live music venues
Shopping centres
Running routes
Parks
Kid-friendly spots
Hotels
Lodges
Bnb’s
Backpackers
Resorts
Golfing venues
Hiking areas
Swimming areas
Beaches
I’m also calling out some good folk to help out and list 10 of their favourite locations!
Mike
Wezzo
From-The-Couch
Vincent
Khaya
CherryFlava
2OceansVibe
Chris
JustBcoz
Cath
Your invites are in the mail!

Dude, I got your mail, I went on and had a look around, but can’t for the life of me figure out how to add a destination to your map?
Instructions please?

Magic idea – will def. help if I can (Ahem – looking at Chris M’s comments) … dummy instructions please?

I mean, ye I am juggling 100 things at the same time, but really, it didn’t look straight forward. Must I add your map to My Maps or something?

This is an awesome concept, I’d like to add some points for tourists ahead of the 2010 World Cup to the map!

Hey Chris, damn dude I didn’t think it was complicated. What a cost. I just followed the instructions on the “Collaborate” link… has anyone else had problems??

Hey Nic, I’d dig to be involved, just drop me a mail.
October 30th, 2009 at 10:15 am
@Nic – Perhaps it’s just because I was working at the same time and didn’t look correctly.
I’ll take a proper look over the weekend

So it seems as though it’s not as simple as i thought. But there are a couple of tricks.
Once you’ve clicked on the link in the email, the map will load. You then have to click on “Edit” which is in the left sidebar. That will give you three little icons in the top left corner of the map. To place a point of interest you need to click the little blue marker next to the hand, choose your location, edit the info and click save. Once you do it once you’ll see it becomes a lot more natural!

Hey Nic, yeah also had a look at the map and like Chris had no idea how to add anything. Will definitely have another look when I get a chance.

Such mapping has been done by Google Earth already for the past 2 1/2 years. To add spots of your categories would make the map utterly cluttered and counter-productive.
We might as well add the 27,000+ locations each year where a murder takes place, or where accidents with muliple deaths occured. That would make for a fascinating and revealing map. A similar concept is already available in the US and UK, of course with just a fraction of fatalities as South Africa records annually.

Elgar – Your single-minded inability to look past your ridiculous paradigm is painful to say the least. You clearly don’t grasp the concept of user generated content and the nature of what some might call “social” media. Collaboration is the intention here. If you don’t want to look at this map layer, then don’t. But don’t be an idiot, again.

I’ve started by adding my favourite dining spots, I’ll continue until I’m happy that anyone browsing your map will get a good meal wherever they are in Jozi.

You rock my world! Nice one. I saw that you’ve started adding. Love it.

November 27th, 2009 at 8:53 pm
Hi Nic, I still don’t have an invite and others I promoted this with are asking me how to get connected to it. You should have my e-mail from the reply I take it?

Fab idea !!! the 2010 tourists will probably be quite tech savvy, and your map will give them lotsa options between soccer matches.
