This is an absolutely incredible short story told by Neil Blomkamp. I can’t help but see the link between literal aliens from the skies and illegal aliens from other countries in South Africa.
Blomkamp seems to be a maverick that is making waves in his field of expertise and I for one, cannot wait to see District 9.

Fans of good movies beware: “District 9″ has been the #1 box office hit this weekend in America, with the average movie-goer age 13 and male. This should warn you of the infantile nature of the movie per se, and encourage you to skip this one.
Judging from the trailer, this film is total trash.

@Elgar
Firstly, it’s not a trailer, but a shortfilm on which District 9 was based.
Secondly, don’t judge a movie without having watched it yourself.
Personally, I can’t wait to see it. Yes, I am male, but I’m certainly not 13.

I am a Saffa in the US and I saw District 9 over the weekend – it opened here on Friday. I have to say that it is absolutely AMAZING! And I say that as someone who is definitely NOT usually into alien movies. It really is such an original film, and yet it has such a South African feel with local actors and all of it shot in Jozi. There is such a huge hype about it here – it’s #1 in the US box office currently, and it has received incredible critical acclaim from publications like the Washington Post and LA Times. To cut through the noise that is the massive moneymaking US movie machine is truly an amazing feat, and we have so much to be proud of in our fellow Saffa director Neill Blomkamp. I would highly recommend seeing it when it comes out in SA!

Oh and p.s. to Elgar – I am over 30 years of age and female!

I agree with Sarah, saw the movie the other day in New Zealand, great movie! Kept my full interest throughout the whole movie which many don’t these days. Great action and story, really cool movie.
Awesome to see a great movie NOT based in the US for once.
Produced by a fellow kiwi Peter Jackson also I think.

I watched the movie this weekend and agree that it was great! Apart from being South African, and the very South African associations in it, it was a world class entertaining movie.
Joburg looks great with a huge space ship over it, looks awesome!
Also I’m not 13, or male

I still haven’t been to see District 9 but I have been so keen on it as I’ve heard so many good things about the film. However a couple days ago, some friends of mine went to see it and walked out 25 minutes in because they said it was the biggest load of crap they’d ever seen!
I’m still so keen to check it out, as I love to locals producing amazing stuff!
