The script of this movie was down before South Africa’s Xenophobic riots – but make no mistake, xenophobia was already there. But filming (in a Gauteng squatter camp) took place shortly after the riots, and must certainly have influenced the director and cast.

At least one of the stars (Jason Cope, who plays Christopher, the lead Alien, and didmotion capture for many of the other aliens) has been seen on SA screens – in a soapie, in the Pure Monate Show, and in the movie Bunny Chow.

This is going to be the biggest south african film ever made, releasing in over 3000 cinemas in america alone.

Jackson describes D9 as “raw” – a rough, docco-style sci fi that drifts between action and documentary.

a cast of unknowns, a new cinematic style, and the fact that jackson has thrown his weight behind SA cinema, make this a big moment for sa film.

Really? You don’t think that the movie looks like it takes its mark from what occurred last year? At all?

I suppose, it would be one incredible turn-around time on deliverables to have made a film in under a year and get Peter Jackson on board, so fair point…

I don't think it has anything to do with the xenophonic episode. It's been said that it's based on the short film Alive in Joburg (2005, Neill Blomkamp).
