Well, the statue of Madiba at Nelson Mandela Square is all dressed up for the 2010 World Cup. As you can see below he is wearing a lovely yellow football jersey!
It might be something “small” in terms of marketing and promotion but I think it’s a fantastic idea considering the amount of people in general and tourists in specific who take their picture with the massive and interestingly proportioned Madiba Statue.
Good work I think. Very nice.

Well, I could think of more tasteful and dignant ways to display a Mandela stature.
This one is reduced to a cheap advertisement, like a Goodyear blimp or a McDonald Ronald, and eludes to a man of advanced age who, if he tried to kick a ball, would most likely tip over and die of exhaustion.
No, I am rather disgusted over the advertisement puppet, especially as the event promises to be an utter disaster for South Africa.

elgar – why do you bother? I don’t get it, if you think everything is going to fail why don’t you just jump off a very high cliff and save yourself the trouble of being proven right, or wrong for that matter?
I can sort of see where you are coming from regarding the use of the statue as advertising. But let’s be honest there are many more underhanded people using Mandela in many more dodgy ways to make money.
At least this relatively disproportionate statue is made to look somewhat more fun. Especially considering the shirts are rotated.

Well, where I come from, critics are not enticed or forced to commit suicide to silence them. There are profoundly different perceptions of democracy between you and me, apparently.
March 30th, 2009 at 2:09 pm
Ye, and where I’m from, critics provide rational criticism. Guess we can’t always have what we want then?
Honestly, why do you bother? your comment was not criticism, it was blatant negativity that was in no way justified with fact: “especially as the event promises to be an utter disaster for South Africa”.
Does it promise that? Really? Or do you just want so badly for it to fail so you can be right? Why not be supportive instead of always trying to be that person?
Furthermore, I didn’t imply that you should commit suicide, I implied that your view on the world clearly leaves you with nothing to be positive about… so much so that it could be suicidal. Simple. Let’s not play this game.

I read the advice, “jump off a very high cliff if you think that everything is going to fail” as an instruction how to end someone’s life. As we are not born with wings, jumping off a very high cliff makes a fatal demise a rather certain outcome foretold.
Judging from the incompetence of planners and organisers of 2010, and the political will of the ANC to demolish South Africa to make former Rhodesia look like a nirvana, and the complete inadequacies of a South African national team, my expectations for the tournement are indeed down to zero.
It will be a disaster in respect of sports results, finance and reputation. The ban of the Dalai Lama from South Africa is a fitting trademark of a South Africa run by ANC lunatics and extremists.

Someone else you might to suggest to “jump off a high cliff,” after he expressed his skepticism (not to be confused with negativism!):

Is the old shit still alive, looks like 27 years in jail did him the world of good and not like some said. Life on robben island will shorten ones life.

Seems like we still have some pretty miserable people in this country. Not only do their writing skills leave much to be desired but they are downright malicious with no regard or respect for positive, moral, ethical South Africans who spend their lives improving the world as a whole and South Africa in particular. If you’re going to contribute in a meaningful way to a blog it would be a good idea to put your brain in gear before your mean little fingers touch the keyboard. Probably a little too much to ask from the likes of infidel and elgar. Stop polluting the world with your ignorance, read more and get a life. South Africa is a young democracy, soccer is a sport and life is for living.

Are you married to the K4s and that is why you love them so much. I just hope you and you family never get raped, mugged or killed by these savages. South Africa is just another shit hole in Africa and will just get worse and worse. You dumb whites who think SA is a wonderful place dont want to open your eyes and see what is realy going on. Take a trip over seas and see how the others live then go home and think about it. You might get a fright and realise what is going on there. But in the mean time miss perfect, have a nice life.

infidel – firstly you are not the first racist, ignorant immigrant I’ve dealt with on this platform so let me start with the formalities: Why are you not using your real name? If you have such firm believes and strong opinions about our country stand behind them and be proud of them? Or do you recognise that you are a racist fool and thus are embarrassed by yourself?
Secondly do not assume that I have never been overseas. I have lived on every continent in the world and travelled to over 20 different countries so far (I’m still fairly young so I have time to get to the other countries). So your assumption that my choice are blind ignorance is misguided. I have an EU passport yet I CHOOSE TO STAY HERE. I have seen what other countries have but I like what SA has.
People like you really get under my skin. infidel, is that some sort of clever attempt at a pun, or irony? What is that? Do you even grasp the meaning of that word? And furthermore, don’t think I don’t know who you are, where you are from and what your intentions are. People like you always have the same intention. You would be better suited visiting the lovely and factually correct, ZA Hell blog. Google it and find kindred souls.

A bit of optimism would be nice! I am not much of a football fan and prefer rugby – but aware enough to know that South Africa needed this World Cup and the fruits thereof go far beyond sport! We are not living in a perfect world or a perfect country and it will never be perfect – but shame on those who criticize and don’t do anything to make it better. We have a right to criticize – but should not stop there -provide advice or do something that will improve the life of someone apart from your own!

@infidel You should swing by the UK some time, try saying things about their government&country like you’re trying to do here. And after you’re released from prison, enjoy the deportation – yes, rich 1st world countries are deporting foreign citizens nowadays. Minus 1 for “they’re better than us” sentiment.
You know what surprised me, infidel? Finding out that there are still white British citizens living in Zimbabwe. Allow me to state the first “what the fuck?”. I mean, surely, as a knowledgeable individual on the state of affairs in sub-Saharan Africa, you’d think that anyone with half a chance would pack up and leave at the first available opportunity?
The simple fact is, we like it here, despite what people like you seem to think. And I’m convinced that the fact that you _don’t_ like it here isn’t due to SA being a “shit hole nation”. That’s a matter of perspective, infidel, and it’s easy (cowardly in fact) to hide behind an anonymous name and spout crap like this all over the internet.
That’s why I’m associating this comment with a face and a name, infidel. Because maybe unlike you, I actually believe what I say – and yes, between the ANC, Eskom, SAPS and Telkom we’ve got a lot of problems, but there are 40 million + South Africans who deal with and strive in spite of those problems.
But please, do continue with your mindless drivel. For those of us who have chosen to stand up for ourselves, to take advantage of the abundant opportunities in this country, your pitiful whining serves as a reminder (sometimes painful, but mostly encouraging) of who we might have been, and the simple fact that we disagree with your sentiment spurs us on.

Hey, a copmliment – “miss perfect”! I’ve been telling everyone that for ages and it takes a stranger a matter of seconds to recognise it – you can’t be stupid after all!
I don’t “love” any race or nationality – it’s a case of having respect for others and treating people in the way you’d like to be treated. Try it, you might be surprised.
After all Nelson Mandela has done in his lifetime he has earned respect for his achievements – that much is beyond question. I have lived and travelled overseas many times and choose to live here where I have experienced crime a number of times. It’s going to take generations to sort out the problems which exist because of lack of education, health care and employment. That’s what we should be concentrating on improving. What you need to realise is that crime is committed by a small percentage of the population, not by one race or one nationality, and we’re exceptionally lucky that the route of our problem does not lie with religion which is why we should encourage communication, sport and understanding; even if we don’t get it right or win every time.
We’ll be able to see our way out of the “mess” we’re in while the rest of the world will be spending their ill gotten gains on promoting wars to line their pockets further. Being white doesn’t guarantee anything in the way of brains or reasoning – you just have to look at the mass of Americans who put Bush into the White House to understand that.
We need to deal wih the problems we’ve got, not add to them by criticising an elderly man who has done more than anyone else to uplift the spirits of the majority of South Africans.

Nice statue. The shirt looks better on the former South African president. Hopefully, South Africa will win SA2010.

Another important part is that if you are an older person, travel insurance with regard to pensioners is something you should make sure you really consider. The older you are, a lot more at risk you will be for permitting something undesirable happen to you while in most foreign countries. If you are not covered by some comprehensive insurance coverage, you could have a number of serious issues. Thanks for revealing your advice on this web blog.
