This seems to be a trustworthy document that appears to be for South African’s wishing to vote abroad.
So what you’ll need to do is the following:
1. See if you qualify to vote abroad by visiting the IEC website.
To be eligible to vote there is one major prerequisite: You need to already be registered as a voter.
2. Download this form. <- click on the text to start download.
3. Fill in the form.
4. Send it off to the IEC BEFORE FEBRUARY 27th 2009 – THIS IS EXTREMELY NB. YOU HAVE 4 DAYS TO COMPLETE THIS IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY.
5. You will then be eligible to vote at your nearest mission according to the IEC website. This, in my opinion, means your nearest embassy. But for more info about your nearest SA mission download THIS FORM <- click the link to download the list.
6. Vote on April 15th 2009.
I’m not particularly impressed with the deadlines put in place. Let’s hope this all works out for the best. If you are abroad and reading this please email these steps on to your friends, post the link to this post on your Facebook status, tweet these links and call someone to let them know. Just spread the word and be as proactive as possible.

This is a frustrating process. The IEC told me that they are too busy at the moment to talk to me – someone will call me soon – how soon??? the deadline is 27th?

As a South African living in the UK on a work permit I am not permitted to vote in the elections. Considering a major part of my decision to work in the UK as opposed to RSA was my unhappiness with the current government and I am being declined to opportunity to make it possible for me to return to the RSA by voting for a new government – is that really free and fair?

My post about this will go live tomorrow morning, first thing!

I hate to be negative but very few people indeed will fit the requirements to be able to vote overseas. And it is extremely last minute.
But it is good that sports people and diplomats can vote!

Judging by the comments, people seem to be mislead by the title of this blog. The details mentioned above and links to the IEC website do not apply to South Africans living permanently or on a long-term basis abroad; it applies only to South African residents who would be abroad temporarily during the election and as correctly highlighted have fulfilled “the major prerequisite: You need to already be registered as a voter”.

I unfortunately did not know about this procedure & application form for South Africans to vote overseas so have therefore missed the dead line. Im currently living in London.
What else can i do to find out if im registered to vote in 2009 as im desperate to vote. I was told i need to get down to my nearest embassy before the decision to let us vote is passed but im now under the impression that the decision has already been made. I have voted in 2 genereal elections already including the last one so i have a strong feeling iam registered but would still like to be sure and check.
If someone could please get back to me as soon as possible regarding this so i dont waste anymore time and miss my chance to vote.

Every citizen is entitled to a vote, whether in london, New York, or on the moon. If the constitution really is the literature we should live by, then there is no argument here. i hope this goes through…

ok sorry i missed the point here, oops…

Hi Nic,
You say go vote but unfortunately as I live in Australia Perth in particular and had got the forms filled in, you can only vote in Canberra, which means an plane flight $$ at that to get there, they not opening polls anywhere else in Australia, unless I am wrong.
Please email me on mailraytoday@yahoo.com.au if I am incorrect.

Raymond

So reading this I get so annoyed. I too have been working abroad on a ship for several years and visiting in between my mom and family in Cape Town. The last time I was home was in September. And I dont remember there being anywhere to register to vote. This is such a joke, its great to finally get the chance to vote however there are strings attached. I am currently in Norway and where I live is no SA consulate, I would have to take a plane and pay for a hotel room as well so where is the justice in that. If the person that is in jail has the right to vote why make it so difficult for the rest of us who abide by the rules. I sincerely hope this changes however I am not keeping my hopes up. I am not impressed at all. But I will make peace with this as I dont need this aggravation

All SA abroad are now allowed to vote. You need to register for a special vote at nearest embassy.
Talk Radio 702 has just broken the story… the Constitutional Court has made a unanimous judgement and upheld the Pretoria High Court’s ruling on South Africans living abroad to vote.
South Africans that are already on the voters role have until the 27th of March to register for a Special Vote at their nearest embassies. You can check whether you appear on the voters roll by entering your South African identity number on this link: https://www.elections.org.za/AmRegister/AmRegister.aspx

“To be eligible to vote there is one major prerequisite: You need to already be registered as a voter.”
I think you mean two major prerequisites. You also have to show that you are only out of the country temporarily. So no luck for those of us who are on work permits, ancestry visas etc. According to the IEC website only the following are eligible:
i. On holiday
ii. Business trip
iii. Attending a tertiary institution
iv. On an education visit or
v. Participating in an international sport event

i just want to say where is the list for NZ voters what embassy do they go to?
And yes not particularly hot on the tight deadline either. With all SA lazy staff and red tape will they process it in time? Here is hoping.

I was so excited when I heard I could vote. I’m living in London and the major reason I left SA was because of the way it was being governed but now I’m disappointed to see I do not qualify to vote.
Oh well.

Hey – what happened there! These moegos stole my right to vote for a crime-free SA right from under my nose. Right will triumph, I take some consolation in this…but when and whatwill be the cost?

Wonderful to determine That’s not me man or woman whom considers this way. It is far from a similar here’s Parts of Asia. The natives perhaps see it slightly in another way. I usually love to try to find an International female perspective.
