A relatively large issue in South Africa is transport. Some people have five cars, some have none, some people carpool (very rarely), some use taxis, some walk, hitchhike or find other means of transport where necessary. Safety on our roads is a massive problem with accidents too often carelessly taking place.
Car Share online is trying to solve the problem of too many people driving alone in their car, wasting petrol, destroying the environment and creating congestion on our roads.
This is basically a craigslist for lifts. You can either advertise a route, lift or trip you are taking or respond to an advert and take up someone’s offer and drive with them.
From the website:
OBJECTIVE OF WEBSITE CS’s goal is to encourage less vehicle traffic on the roads of South Africa in the interest of reduced commuting costs, improved community health, and clean air. However, www.carshare.co.za (the “Website”) is not providing a public transportation service.
It seems as though the approach of Car Share is to match prospective carpoolers with a carpool that will, in the long term, become a viable solution for their travel needs. It is apparent that the site is not trying to provide once-off solutions for travelers. This is interesting and probably a safer way to run the service. If you were to offer once-off trips there might be security issues regarding who accepts or offers the services on the website.
If you have tried the site or intend to please let me know so we can get some feedback regarding hte service.

CarShare site chick here – we’ve added a safety feature recently for our registered users. An email address provided on request to send details of who they are traveling with – ID, car reg, going to/from wherever etc – that will store this info in our database free of charge.
It’s still a very new site – but we have high hopes that we can help folk safely hook up with others to travel with, and cut our stuck-in-traffic hours down to the bare minimum by reducing the numbers of cars out there.
Perhaps we’ll even clear that smog over Cape Town every morning a little!

I Cant beleive my eyes!
With all the crime and issues going on in South Africa – this is one of the worst idea’s i have ever seen.
Yeah sure you can meet people before the time – the person could look like a farely decent business person…the next day when you arrive could put a knife to your throat and demand you to drive him where he tells you to?!
Organising a lift club between friends or co workers is easy enough to do without the help of a potentially dangerous website?
Unless I understand it all wrong, of course?!
I do not think The safety issue has been considered – which is the MAIN issue in South Africa…

Wonderful to view I’m not alone which considers this way. It’s not at all precisely the same here’s Asia. Asians perhaps visualize it a bit in another way. I want to search for a great Oriental female point of view.
