Hey, Nic, interesting post and interesting times! I am glad that Mbeki showed the dignity that he is capable of in stepping down, I agree with Rouvanne that despite his huge mistakes Mbeki always had South Africa's interests at heart.

I find it interesting that you say you want a "human being", someone you can relate to, as President. I do not share this sentiment at all. I want someone with good policies and the ability to follow through. I am actually wary of leaders who are good speakers and are known for their charisma. For me it is the old cliche that actions speak louder than words.

Would be interested to know why you think otherwise.

I agree it isn't the end, just can't figure out what it is the beginning of.

Echoing Rouvanne on the example Mbeki's resignation has given the rest of Africa. Yoweri Museveni willfully leaving power? Pigs will fly.

Hey Nic - interesting times indeed! I have to admit that I was pleased to hear - although not yet official - that Kgalema Mothlanthe will take over the Presidency - he is a far more level headed fellow than our Speaker, who does not always say the right things and the right time.

I would also like to say that watching President Mbeki last night resign in such a calm manner was pretty emotional. I don't agree with many of his points of view, but no-one can deny that he has dedicated his life to this country, and should be honoured for that. The only reason he joined the ANC at 14 was because they wouldn't allow him to before that!

Also, in the spirit of SA Rocks, I feel that he has showed the rest of Africa how a President should act - even when the rug is being pulled from under his feet! His party told him that they had had enough of him, and he accepted that, thanked us, the country, for allowing him to lead, and resigned.
