Khotso Mokoena wins SA its first 2008 Olympic Medal!

Khotso Mokoena finally put SA on the Beijing Olympics medals table with a silver in the men’s long jump on Monday.

He was 10cm behind winner Irving Saladinho of Panama, jumping 8.24m to the winner’s 8.34m.

I am very excited that Long Jump was the event to give SA a silver medal at this years Olympics as it was my best and favourite track event when I was still an active sportsman!

It was awesome, they never showed a replay of his last jump, it looked as if it was good enough for gold but it wasn’t allowed. Would be interesting to see by how much he was over the board.

(P.S. Nic, technically long jump is a field event, not track)

Welcome to the Olympics! [For the ones counting, guess who's ahead as the African country with the most medals: Zimbabwe has one four medals -- including a gold medal].
BTW, until Khotso got the medal I was preparing me for the navel gazing about who to blame for the bad showing at the Olympics … I guaranteed myself that the fact that the rest of the world (and the continent!) may be running, jumping, swimming, etc faster, higher, harder… Well done Khotso.
