SA sport sucks – We don’t have any medals yet

Tsk tsk tsk. This is such a bad attitude to have.

There have been a fair amount of jokes going around, on the radio, in the halls, on the interweb about SA not having any medals. I think that’s absolute bollocks.

In my opinion the Olympics is the one event that one can truly say that it is an accomplishment just to participate.

Not to say that there isn’t a chance of us coming home with some medals. And not to say that those who don’t win medals suck. I just think it’s the same mentality as that of the Rugby World Cup, The World Cup in 2010, The Gautrain and anything else that we try to do.

If we don’t trump everyone all the time then someone thinks we suck. It frustrates me to no end that South Africans can be so fickle. That we can flip-flop so easily and effortlessly. It frustrates me that if we aren’t world champs then we are losers and not worthy of the support of our fellow citizens. I am proud of every athlete of ours over at the Olympics, whether they bring home a medal or not, they are over there, they have dedicated their lives to a sport and to us, South Africans and South Africa and that makes me proud.

Yes, I agree, mostly the 4 x 100m relay team. They swam a time almost a second better than last time when they won the gold. It is disappointing that they couldn’t medal but its an awesome effort to still be going faster 4 years later.

Agreed, we love sucess and hate failure with no in between. There is always a winner and a loser in anything competitve and you can’t always be the winner.

Hardly surprising when the lions share of focus, and presumably funding, goes into a handful of sports. Some of the sports that we are competing in are never heard of except when the Olympics come around. Given that, I think it’s marvellous that we have athletes able to qualify for these sports despite the fact that nobody gives a toss about them; except suddenly when they aren’t good enough to get medals.

To even have started the Gautrain, win the 2010 Soccer World Cup bid, win the World Cup Rugby, and yes, make it to the Olympics, is a feat very few other third world countries can accomplish! I had the opportunity to meet some of our Olympians heading out to Beijing. They have trained for this moment for years and are each one winnners simply through having made it this far!

I agree, well done all Saffies for trying your hardest and getting there. I am a PGA Professional and I can tell you that in some tournaments in the lesser tours I expect to win, but just qualifying for some tournaments like the SA or British Open is accomplishment in itself.

All I can say is watching the “Transformed” hockey teams taking pastings from almost every country in the world (and remembering we used to be 2nd in the world at this sport) did bring a tear to my eyes, I am sure their beatings of note made little black kids everywhere wish they too could have a hockey stick… STUPID POLITICIANS SHOULD GET THEIR FAT ARSES OUT OF SPORT, finished and klaar

    Down but not out

We may be down as a nation with our poor sporting results but we are defiantly not out. The weekend produced some great sport action from all across the world. The Rugby was superb, to watch the master of the fetch and turnover game McCaw in action. We saw Phelps win his record 8th gold medal and the China team keeps their dominance over the Olympics. Just what do they feed those people?

So Monday and we are back on level playing fields and if you are feeling at all depressed because of a game over the weekend then it may be time to reevaluate your core belief system. We cannot depend on other people, especially those we have no influence over to dictate our emotions and attitude. We are independent people who have control over our own emotions. Take yourself by the shirt collar and give yourself a firm speaking to. We are South African, We are Business owners and We will have a great day.

We look forward to this week, new business contacts, new customers, new relationships, maybe a medal for team SA and defiantly a new attitude to our attitude. Have a good one.
