Don’t pack your bags just yet

I don’t often punt events on SA Rocks but this little lecture seems well worth the punt. Thanks to Andy for the email.

Is now the time to emigrate?

Staying in South Africa could be the best decision you’ve ever made.

Are things really as bad as they seem, or are we blind to the country’s true potential?

Don’t pack your bags just yet. Come and listen to the respected trend analyst, JP Landman, outline his widely read article ‘Is the bad mood justified?‘ He will discuss the current political and economic situation in South Africa and illustrate the paradigm shift that is necessary for us to see the good that is taking place amid all the negativity, and how to capitalise on the opportunities it will bring.

This valuable opportunity is on a first-come, first-served basis. Presentations of this nature would normally cost a few hundred Rand per seat, but because we believe in our country and in spreading the optimism, we are giving you this once-off seminar for only R70 per person. Seats are limited, so please book early to avoid disappointment. Click here to confirm your place. You will be taken to the Online Booking Zone; click on Search for a training event, and select Where is SA heading? to complete your booking. Each delegate will need to complete a separate registration.

The irony is that any Australia open day run by any Emmigration Agency (even the fly-by nighy ones) probably will get a better turn out than this, you see South African just don’t want to believe

  2. Gravatar Nic Haralambous Says:

@me – I don’t think I’ve said this before but I agree with you. Too true. It’s like we want to be bleak with prospects, deny some of the facts and only accept those that push certain agendas. When is the breaking point? When do people want to change? You tell me.

  3. Gravatar Jack Traveler Says:

There are lots of people in society (and expats abroad) conspiring the keep the negative thought processes going. It’s the old fashioned group-think mentality from the old days and those who put the positive forward are often brow-beaten or challenged to “toe the line” on the party-line of “SA is doomed!!” We need to take a stand against these cynical underminers of South Africa’s positive destiny.

dont leave now- your rands are worth nothing. rather wait until it strengthens again to be able to get a head start in your new country. and now is the time to go back smiling and make a killing on the weakness of the currency!

For the most part, people who complain and are sceptical, and we’ve all been there at some stage, are for the most part uninformed about all the good stuff that’s happening, and we actually have no idea how great some of the good stuff is! I blame the media for this-big time. We recently attended a presentation by Steuart Pennington called SA THE GOOD NEWS, and we were blown away! Besides our crime, a lot of the negatives we are facing are happening everywhere else, but one of the good things about his talk, is that he quotes some amazing statistics from the “Global Competitiveness Survey” and we are right up there with a number of things, so GUYS, before you complain..GET EDUCATED, and know what you’re talking about. We left his talk thinking, “why don’t all South African’s know this stuff!” So thanks for this site!! My advice is…if you’re honestly looking for the good in this country, go find it…it’s EVERYWHERE!

Just the other day I had to explain to some idiot that the Global oil price has tripled in the last year and its amazing that South Africa has been able to keep the price so low, nope here was the ignorant idiot (and in-law family member) saying it was all the governments fault he is paying more at the station, like the rest of world is all getting cheap petrol and we are getting ripped off, such stupidity ….
And my favourite pet hate this week is people who go the New Zealand open days run by some fly by night Emigration Agency hoping to cash in on their fears, where they are told that in NZ the roads are paved with gold, the sheep are 4 times bigger and every person gets a free boat when they walk in the door and then they have the audacity to come and repeat this shit to me like its a fact and tell me how great New Zealand is when they have never even visited the place themselves(and I have)… Dude if New Zealand is so f$#$ing fabulous why does 50% of the population live outside the country, what do they know that your emigration agent has not told you??

    Beryldene,

    You miss an important point.
In recent months the amounts of major crisis facing the country totally engulfs any “good news” stories. You need to understand that people cannot just shift focus to some “Global Competitive Survey” when we live in a country with such high crime levels. You also mention “besides our crime” as if crime is the only crisis in SA. That is also extremely misinformed as the main problem is that we seem to have a far wider range of issues facing our country right now, with very little indication that this will not be the trend going forward.
But, I still respect your optimism.

  8. Gravatar Grant Says:

Well I have an update for all those who wondered how the Durban event went. 12 people rocked up – In the hall that we were supposed to have the lecture, there was an ANC Youth League meeting (oh the irony). It turns out the event was cancelled – Who knows why, lack of interest ?, a stupid idea in the first place ? But suffice to say the sponsers – Pastel – apparently sent out emails to say it was cancelled and the 12 people that did not get that message get nothing more than a sorry. What a waste of time

  9. Gravatar Nic Haralambous Says:

Grant – that is really disappointing. I have heard after the fact, that it was a lack of response all round that ended the talks.

Speaks volumes if you ask me.

  10. Gravatar Recruitment Girl Says:

Like someone once said to me “the grass isn’t always greener on the other side”. This is my country and I am not going to run away!!!

  11. Gravatar John Smith Says:

I was about to sign up and book tickets until I got to this ridiculous on-line application form, wanting my ID number and my whole pedigree and life story – I’m surprised I want asked for my full CV and birth certificate too… Anyway that put me off – why cant couldn’t we just buy tickets cash? – at the door – or from an agent in town, without so much Red Tape??

  12. Gravatar ST Says:

    @ Grant,

Not surprising at the lack of interest.
If I want to know trivia about the economy I can go to various SA websites. The majority of people contemplating leaving SA want to do so because of crime. FACT!!!!!
Give me a talk where somebody can convince me that major efforts are being made to curb crime, and I will go. JP Landman’s focus is totally away from what people want to really know about the future of the country.
