Patrice Motsepe on the cover of Forbes

Posted on 07 March 2008

Patrice Motsepe entered the mining business when South Africa ended apartheid. Today the onetime lawyer and avowed capitalist is the country’s first black billionaire.

Says Forbes about our very own cover billionaire, Patrice Motsepe.

I was going to write an extended post about the list, the winners, losers, youngsters and fraudsters but tycoon.co.za has done a sterling job of it.

So have a read of their post about this years billionaire’s list.

An extract from their post:

Motsepe, is South Africa’s first ever black national to make it to the list and is, with Dangote, one of only two black Africans on the list.

Not one to shy away from controversy, Motsepe made his money from mining, helped along by Black Economic Empowerment and has a habit of being in the right place at the right time.

And a parting note, it is incredible to me to see that Mark Zuckerberg has made the list at $1.5billion. Wow. He’s my age. That is incredible.

On a lighter note, Forbes may want to publish a list of kleptomaniacs and the money they are hiding in South Africa, Switzerland, Australia and the Cayman Islands. Patrice’s ‘mere’ $2b and Dangote’s ‘paltry’ $3b is petty cash ;-) Between old thugs like Arap Moi, Mobutu, Mugabe, Bongo, Obasanjo, Mubarak, El Bashir, Nguema and new-age thieves such as Kabila, Mwanawasa, Chavez, Bush, Putin, Museveni and Mbeki, Motsepe is still learning the ropes.

At least Patrice does not go around trying to present himself as a superstar. A lesson for his bald friend Tokyo Sexwale.

Congratulations Patrice! now how about that small loan for my struggling gas station?
