Espresso is coffee, right? It should taste like coffee shouldn’t it? Apparently not!
In what is being heralded as a world first, the net is buzzing with word of a South Africans who have created a tea that tastes like espresso!
Have a look:
Tea Espresso from CHROST on Vimeo.
The people who put all of this genius together are Red Espresso.
“Red espresso is actually Rooibos tea. It isn’t espresso at all, which is to say, it’s not coffee. People are using espresso machines to brew the Rooibos and the resulting cup exhibits much of the same character as espresso coffee, with a saffron crema. It is richer, more flavorful, and with higher antioxidant content than conventional tea.”
What a great idea and isn’t it incredible to be able to claim a world first? Well, let’s see, does anyone know any more about this? If you do, please let me know anything. If you are from Red Espresso then contact me and tell me more, let’s do an interview.

I first saw red espresso advertised in a coffee shop, House of Coffees I think, at least a year ago. Since then most coffee shops, including Mugg & Bean have added it to their offerings. I am an espresso addict but have yet to give red espresso a try. I have seen tins of it in sale in Pick n Pay but was disappointed that as a local product it was priced similarly to imported Illy coffee.

Having just browsed around the Red Espresso site I realise that the product I saw in PnP wasn’t in a tin but in a pouch. It did seem rather expensive though, at least R10 more than the same quantity of House of Coffees espresso. But it seems fairly typical for new products to start off expensive and then drop in price over time.
