I am interested to know nowadays who people feel have been, will be, might or are influential in SA?
There are the obvious people from the past who are celebrated extensively. The like of Nelson Mandela, Steve Biko, Chris Hani, Desmond Tutu and others.
But I think that this list is changing and political figures are no longer the only ones being idealised in SA. I have a sneaking suspicion that capitalism, wealth and innovation are fast overtaking politics as influential justification.
Some thoughts: Mark Shuttleworth (Hip2bSquare is fantastic), Jacob Zuma (For the masses he represents humanity in all it’s fallible glory), Fatimah Meer, Gareth Cliff (I know, I know), these are just ideas, John Robbie, Jake White, John Smit, Oscar Pistorius, Chester Williams, Peter de Villiers and Natalie du Toit are just some thoughts.
What I am asking is who are the new breed of idols, role models and the like?
Do you think that the people are becoming tired of the same figures and the same streets and corners being names after one man? Is it bad that I am saying this? But I think that Nelson Mandela should be left in peace to enjoy his old age!
