Holidays, travelling, trips, time and time off

Yes, it is that time of year, people are taking breaks, blogging less, reading less, not working, spending money, giving, caring, living and many other things.

I am off to St Francis. Let me know if you’ll be there and we can have a beer. Otherwise I am interested to know where you are headed this festive season? Any interesting plans or exotic trips happening?

I have friends going to India, Miami, Mozam, Bots, CT and a few other places. I would also love to know where you have had the best holiday in South Africa and why.

Mine, hmmm, mine would probably be somewhere in the Eastern Cape in my University years. Kenton and Port Alfred are beautiful, peaceful, free, open, dramatic and serene. All of which make for a fantastic holiday break.

Here’s a pic from the SA Rocks Flickr group to keep you motivated to get away in SA this holiday:

Hey, check out how sexy the PE pier looks :) )

My best holiday ever in South Africa was in December 1989. A bunch of my friends from Wits drove down to the coast to meet up with a bunch of my friends from UPE and we rented a house in the Lookout Beach parking lot in Plett. It was an unrefurbished prefab built heaven knows when – the 1960s?? It was VERY basic with one bathroom (between 10 people!), a rudimentary kitchen and bedbugs in one bedroom (not to mention the previous week’s tenants camping out in the outside servants’ quarters for the first 3 days of our 2 week stay…). But we had the best time imagineable. We had nightly Wits v UPE quarters games; we laid the table for dinner with fresh flowers bought from street vendors in town; we saw in the new year on Central Beach with fireworks and champagne; we cooked ambitious budget meals that we ate by candlelight with all the windows open and the surf crashing outside; and went for midnight walks on the beach, optimistically hoping to find a pansywhell.

It was a time when none of us had any serious problems or had known any real sorrow. The world seemed a kinder and safer place and I knew for sure that as long as I could always get to Plett, nothing could hurt me there.

Today, Lookout Beach (and most of the parking lot) has been washed away, the boy that I was in love with for those two heady weeks is dead, and the world is a far scarier and more complicated place. But I will have the memories of that holiday in my heart forever.

Hey Nic, as a proud Capetonian, I’ll be visiting Port Alfred, Kenton-on-sea etc. what a beautiful break away from the overly busy Cape Town, but still near the much loved ocean.. Enjoy your break and maybe see you in Port Alfred ‘;-)

My brother designed and built that pier as his first on-site project management role as a civil engineer. I see that it also features in some of the advertising PE does.

I had many years of pleasure on the deserted CSF beach. I’m saddened to hear what has happened to what was once once of the finest beaches in the world.
