It’s a very sad day for South Africa, Africa and the world. I’m still in a complete and utter state of shock. My question is why? Why do that? Why not take the car and leave the man and his children alone? No but instead selfish animals must kill. It’s barbaric. I hate dwelling on the negative and I really have faith in this country, but seriously if I have to hear one of our government officials saying we are deeply saddened by Lucky’s untimely death… I am going to flip! Enough. There is a problem!!! CLEARLY you stupid idiots.

This news comes at a time where everyone is in a positive space and getting behind our rugby team, in the hopes of bringing the Webbe Ellis Trophy home… but the vibe has been dampened somewhat for me.

Lucky Dube- you are an inspiration to many a generation. You were loved by many and your music will live on forever. My deepest condolences go out to Lucky’s family and friends. May you rest in peace Sir!

I am so shocked and traumatised by the the news I heard early this morning. What should not happen, happened. Lucky Dube shot dead. I still have a problem to believe that Lucky Dube is dead.
What I know, He will still be in the mind of people all over the world.
Lucky DUbe, you departed, but you remain the greatest. Your music will never die; people will speak of you from generation to generation.

i am beyond words i do not know what has to happen in our country for all this madness and senseless killing Thabo Mbeki is busy fighting silly battles and being trynal ,maybe one of the hierachy (ANC/)should be killed in a stupid high jacking for them to take notice and do something about all this families are left motherless and fatherless because of this nonsense, our government sits there on their thrones and act like there are untouchable because they move around with a hundred body guards that we pay(taxpayers).

our hearts bleed because here is a man who lived with dignity and respect for himself ,his art ,his creator and everyone around him a man who carried himself with all the grace that any one of us wishes we could possess a man who despite his great achievements never changed and was a father a brother and hope for our country.

i dont know what the world is coming to. why do all the nice people go suddenly. lucky Dube was a legend. he was the first musician i got to know and i attended the first show in Uganda and he personally autographed my Cd that i bought. i greatly adored his music. his music will leave on. am so saddened because i hoped some day my children would grow up to one day watch him or see him and experience a true legend like him just like it happened to me. this was so gruesome. did the thugs know that they were attacking lucky…..this was a big blow

In a bit of a shock and very sad. Maybe it will wake us up and make us realize that violence is a problem for all of us. It’s not just up to the Department of Justice or to the cops. They can’t do it alone. Crime is a bigger problem, that concerns every aspects of our society and every governmental department, as well as all of us must take actions.

  20. Gravatar Menzi Bhembe Says:

My sister called me very early this morning to tell me about Lucky. She knows I love the man and I was just devastated. I cant say ‘JAH knows best’ here its not right. Evil knows best. Rest in peace man cause RASTAS NEVER DIE; they rest. A debate has been raging here in Swaziland after police killed one scoundrel like those who’ve robbed us off Lucky i.e. should the police shoot them to kill? I’ve always said ‘YES!’. They dont deserve us to protect their right to life. When I told ppl. about LUCKY 2day, I faced no opposition when I said the S.A.police WHEN they find these guys, they should shoot them to death even if NAKED!!

Maybe Lucky wouldn’t agree but it would appease my soul. To his family, sorry very much. Our pain can never match yours but yes, we are hurting too, a lot. Lucky was a hero. I honestly say I suckled his music from my mother’s breast. My parents loved him too and they’ve told me how one day my father let har go to watch him at the Trade Fair whilst he babysat me.

Its so sad that you had to go so violently like your inspiration Peter Tosh.

    REST IN PEACE Nyamatane.

  21. Gravatar Dickson Andrew Says:

He that riase the sword will surely die by the sword, lucky avenge your killers, peace they will never know, and they have sold their entire generation to sorrow and unrest. You may now rest in peace.

  22. Gravatar Athena Says:

What heinous thing to do…why not just take the car. Barbaric and evil. My prayers are with his family and most of all his child that was there to witness it. I pray for South africa really I do and for the government to finally wake up and realise that crime is a huge issue there and something must be done, ban guns or something…how many more must die??????Please ask that question inocent lives taken…Like Lucky said in his songs..”I am a prisoner” South African citizens are prisoners….and sitting ducks…

  23. Gravatar Ouma Mario (Uganda) Says:

I was appalled dis morn’g as i was leav’g home to hear that OUR inspiration is dead. Why on earth would any one try to take away a noble man like Dube. We in Uganda are PROUD of your Legacy Dube, rest in Peace. The killers wanted to reap where they didn’t sow but the almighty will reward them abundantly, as he roasts them in the fires of Hell.

    Its terrible.

Lucky was a teacher. leader, hero and above all he loved family. Not only was he an inspiration to South Africans but the rest of the world. Its a barbaric and evil act to kill anyone but this is even worse. Lucky was such a special individual in our lives. Why kill him? Why would you not just take the car and leave. Whoever it is that did this, I want you to ask God to forgive you for taking Lucky from us in such a brutal and selfish manner. There wont be another Dube! You have once again robbed us a loved one. May His family find peace and closure in the The Almighty God that Lucky Dube so much revered.

Lucky, rest in peace our legend!!!!!!!

  35. Gravatar BIRIKANO Says:

It is utter sheer madness how the legends of this world should always pass away when they are needed most. I will live to enjoy his song THATS THE WAY IT IS especially the sentence BE GOOD TO THE PEOPLE ON YOUR WAY UP THE LADDER BECAUSE YOU WILL NEED THEM ON YOUR WQAY DOWN.

  36. Gravatar Jason Says:

Looking at these comments one can see how far and wide Lucky’s music has touched people. it’s so moving and amazing. Wow We’ve lost such an Icon, a hero!!

Am I being idealistic here when I say I think websites like SA Rocks should rally up it’s readers, sign petitions and perhaps even start protesting. If we are a democratic nation, then surely we should call upon those who govern us, to also protect us too? I think we should consider this as an option. Human life to many of these evil and selfless animals is nothing. Lets give those who die on a daily basis the dignity they deserve.

  37. Gravatar RAS B Says:

OOHH!!! WHAT A VERY DETESTABLE OCTOBER THE 18TH 2007. MY HEART HAS BEEN CONKED OUT AND THE JOY IS SHUTTERED.

THE SUN HAS BEEN DIMMED AND THE BARBARIANS WILL NEVER HAVE PEACE IN THEIR HEARTS.

  40. Gravatar Captain Slog Says:

Had the good fortune of working with Lucky in Gallo Studios in the 80s – he was one of the kindest, gentlest, most humble men i have ever met. He was totally un-effected by his fame! We will all miss him. As mentioned above – hope that this will shock the powers that be into action and his death will not be in vain!!

  41. Gravatar pastor Kenneth A. King Says:

“Heroes are the hope of a nation or a race. Each time we kill our heroes, we destroy our hope.” The black race has lost another gem in our history again. I am really yet to get over the pain and the shock of Lucky’s demise as a dogged fan of his music. Anyway, his death reminds all of us of the brevity of life and the endlessness of eternity.

  42. Gravatar Essilfie Richard Sage Says:

Iwill forever remember my greatest reggae icon.
You were the first artist whose songs l learnt to sing verbatimly before my sixth birthday. I will forever love you.

  43. Gravatar fanny saruchera Says:

Yes they took away his life but never his spirit. It’s really a crazy world as one of his message says… they killed Lucky but his message lives on. To the Dube family I say, we part with Lucky to meet forever in the new life to come, when Jesus comes.

  47. Gravatar Nick Says:

    Nic,

Why is it a sad day – Lucky Dube shot dead?

You are such a possitive person ignoring these things and pretending there are no crime in South Africa. So why are you sad, sure all your other posts you say there is no issue in South Africa and all is well in the country.

You are really confusing people by posting positive lies.
