Let’s Discuss: Southern Hemisphere Rugby teams

I am interested to know how everyone feels about New Zealand and Australia going out of the Rugby World Cup?

Personally, I feel a bit saddened that they went out. I am of the mind that it would have been incredible to have four teams from the Southern Hemisphere in the semi-finals.

It can also be argued that if we don’t beat Aus or NZ that we don’t really play the best teams. I am not sure about this logic. I firmly believe that when SA wins this final it will be by beating the best team simply by the fact that they are in the final.

NZ are renowned chokers and Aus simply lost their heads. So they went out to better teams on the day and thus deserved to leave the tournament. At least now we still have Argentina and SA in the final. It is a pity that the SA semi-final wont be the final, would be a cracker.

What do you think?

If we go onto win, i for one feel its been cheapened a little by the exits of Aus and NZ, which was probably going to be an epic semi. But thats the rub of the green – no rugby fan here or abroad – except maybe the English can deny that a RWC final between the Boks and NZ would have been a great ending to a fantastic tournament. But give France their due, they made it hard for themselves and they fronted up. They deserve to be in the semi, i cannot say the same thing for England.

The tournament also bids farewells to some the greatest players the game has ever seen from Australia – Stephen Larkham, George Gregan, Stirling Mortlock – undeniably three great players who have tormented us for years – the game is going to be poorer without them. Especially in Aus where they have a very limited player pool.

The Kiwis – what can you say, undoubtedly the greatest team in the world – but they cannot play knock out rugby. I still haven’t figured out why they didn’t play their normal attacking game – they have beaten all and sundry with it in the past three years including 50 pointers against the Boks, England, Australia and France.

    A coaching error perhaps.

As for the Bokke – 160 minutes to glory – and possibly the easiest attempt at the crown we will ever get. Good luck.

As an aside after the opening game, my girlfriend sad beware the teams in candy striped socks – never a truer word spoken.

    Argentina and Fiji !

At least the Aussies will stop moaning about Eddie Jones helping coach South Africa!

This whole North versus South thing is rather silly. I love people because they’re lovable people – why should I love rugby players who are from Australia more than I love rugby players from England?

What I did like seeing was Fiji, Argentina, Samoa & Tonga doing so well. They’ve earned a spot in the Super 14/Tri-nations.

Good luck to the boys tonight…and all the glory belongs to them too – just like it did to the class of ’95.
