Call to get voting for African Blogs

Posted on 10 September 2007

It’s time to unify the bloggers in Africa and more specifically SA. The Bobs are here and thanks to the White African I have discovered the awards that are proving to have large sponsors and great pull…but no African blogs.

The image above is a representation of the nominated blogs for the Bobs. What the hell is wrong with this picture? The White African asked the same question. I don't have a clear answer but I can't say that until reading the post I had never heard of the Bobs. Maybe this is the main problem.

Its not even like the Bobs are irrelevant and unknown, there are some big names involved:

Technorati, Global Voices, Toshiba and O’Reilly to name a few

So this is my call to vote for SA blogs and African blogs in the Bobs! Pick one, pick many, lets discuss it one here and pick a few, pick whichever blog you like but lets get some African representation in the nominations.

Go forth now and submit your African blog of choice!

Well, I tried to nominate Laaitie’s blog, but it wasn’t easy.

The country selector would find nothing between Balngladesh and Turkmenistan, because there was no scrollbar, or if there was it was off my screen.

And when I tried to position it on the map it wouldn not accept South Africa as a valid location, and the cursor then moved to Antarctica and would not move north, so Africa was invisible. I think it may have put him in South Georgia eventually.

Maybe I should try on my other computer, which has a bigger screen.

As pointed out by the White African, the ‘dark continent’ is fairly ‘white’ in this map :-)

No marker to be seen – however, if you click on the link underneath the map (’show locations with one blog’), a few show up – less than 20 for the whole of Africa, that is!

@ Steve – weird – I get the complete list – from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe (of all places…).

Ah well, more work to be done – nominations to be made!

BTW – seems South America is over-represented:
    Sao Paulo – 126 blogs
    San Francisco – 2
    Paris – 98
    New York City – 15
    London – 11

    HUH??????

And South-Afrcia (as a whole): One, uno, een, ein, un, kunye….

Ye, I nominated White African under Kenya (his place of Birth) and it was a mission but it did work for me!

I noticed that S.America was very well (over) represented while N.America didn’t seem to be represented enough. Strange that.

Anyways, I am interested to know who has been nominated. It is definitely worth nominating blogs on mass and building a following!

Just nominated SARS – that is, SA Rocks :-)
Not sure if it went through though, as the locating on the map failed all the time and no confirmation was displayed on sending my entry and I don’t see you under the ‘to be reviewed blogs’ ….. pffffff – wrote them about it – let’s hope it was not a waste of time….

Thanks so much for nominating us!! :) Let’s hope it went through. For a split second I considered nominating myself but thought that was a bit selfcentred!! ;)

It was a little difficult to submit a blog. It obviously has a much more international flavor than the normal US-centric ones that you find – that’s why I felt it was worth making some noise about.

    Nic, thanks for the nod.

hash – Well deserved nod I feel, your blogging is relentless and extremely value!! I can always look forward to reading your posts in my reader!

The main thing wrong with this picture is that your map is not representative of the actual geography of the world. i use to thing that Africa was the second largest continent before looking at your map.
