Or at least something very, very close to the burning man concept is coming to Cape Town in November. For those of you who are not aware of the burning man festival, occasion, event, experience, here is an extract from Wikipedia:

Burning Man is a project best known for an eight-day-long annual festival that takes place in Black Rock City, a temporary city on the playa of the Black Rock Desert in Nevada, 90 miles (150 km) north-northeast of Reno, ending on the American Labor Day holiday in September. Though the event’s specific location on the playa changes from year to year, the location has been quite constant in recent years. The event is described by organizers as an experiment in community, radical self-expression, and radical self-reliance[1] and takes its name from the ritual of burning a large wooden sculpture of a man on the sixth day. The event is organized by Black Rock City, LLC, under the guidance of founder Larry Harvey.

The SA event is being called Afrikaburns and is being held from 22-25 November of 2007. Sounds interesting. Let’s see what the website has to say:

CORE PRINCIPLES

You could be forgiven for thinking that Burning Man is just a party,a fantastical amazing mind-blowing party. It is a whole lot more than that. The Burning Man festival grew out of loose grouping of individuals and organizations who questioned, and continue to question mainstream, highly commercialized society and what it does to the notion and workings of community. Burning Man’s mission statement states:

“Our intention is to generate society that connects each individual to his or her creative powers, to participation in community, to the larger realm of civic life, and to the even greater world of nature that exists beyond society”.

I am very curious as to why people are not making more of a fuss over an event like this being held in SA? I stumbled across the afrikaburns group on facebook and immediately confirmed that I would be attending. Tickets need to be purchased so get on over to the site and have a look. It seems as though if you are willing to spend R300 then then you can attend, there is no cap on these tickets. So check out the site and find out more!

I’m getting convinced about the marketing principle that says you need to hear about something 7 times to buy it.

I saw Burning Man on Facebook, and less than an hour later, this article.

And my interest is starting to spike….

I think that is a fairly good principle if you ask me. I often don’t believe things until someone else has bought in to them. I almost lost on Fall Out Boy concert tickets for this very reason!

I am also extremely interested in the afrikaburns concept and will wait to hear more about the event from organisers before jumping on the bandwagon completely.

okes y’all are so sloooow… I was Media Co.ordin8r for this months ago! set up a little blog before the site was up >> http://afrikaburns.wordpress.com & all. I’ve been perving Burning Man for years, the original in the Black Rock Desert in Nevada – had tickets for the 2001 (week before 9/11).
There a lot of the Silicon valley techies hookup & play with the SF artists & it gets WILD.
I think the SA one may be a lot more connected to the Vortex & trance crew.. but we’ll see. Black Lil (the AfrikaBurns mama) is a rocking1 & if nothing else she’ll make sure it’ll be an outrageous party.

    Hey Maxi,

You WERE co.ordin8r? Indeed, visited your BM-page months ago, so I initially thought this post was by you :-)

Anyway, I look forward to the body-paint-bike-parade….. hmmmm

    Hey Nic,

I know – and M has her own header (incl. mugshot) plus she usually posts on Mondays – and as there is no contributor mentioned, I thought maybe that header got lost in cyberspace this time.

Perhaps you should create your own ‘contributor-admin’-tag?

Thanks for your initiative & efforts – keep up the good work!
