Yes, Crime is a problem in South Africa but it is not one that cannot be solved. Initiatives like CrimeLert are helping to effectively move in the right direction to prevent crime in SA. CrimeLert is not trying to slate the name of our country, it is not trying to suggest to the world that we have a problem that is unresolvable. What CrimeLert is trying to do is make people aware that incidents are happening and we should all become a helpful community that stands up against crime and the criminals.
This is the sort of initiative that makes me believe SA does Rock. Instead of pulling one another apart this website is trying to bring people together to help one another!
From the CrimeLert homepage: “CrimeLERT is a service that aims to SIGNIFICANTLY reduce crime in South Africa.”

CrimeLert was started as a public service portal
to address the challenges in SA of information about criminals and criminal activities that are not generally freely available to the public.
Wanted posters are posted in your local police station, nobody sees them!
Stolen items are not tracked! There are a number of business needs that the CrimeLert site addresses.
CrimeLert is a portal for:
- posting of wanted people posters
- posting of missing people posters
- a directory of links associated with government, security and related services
- listing of stolen items that can be accessed by anybody
CrimeLert provides a great service and asks for four ways that readers can help: Donations, Signing of Petitions, Emailing friends and linking to them.
The objectives of CrimeLert as per the website are as follows:
Help police to address crime by providing additional administrative manpower
Place electronic displays in shopping malls showing wanted criminals and missing persons
On a website display wanted criminals and missing persons and related information
Provide an online registry of stolen items with serial numbers and descriptions, businesses and public can register any stolen item
Provide an up to date list of scams (Internet, email, telephone, etc.)
encourage active community involvement in addressing crime
SMS service for Police to inform business’s of criminal activities in their area
Improve communication channels between police, businesses and public
Get over to CrimeLert and see how you can help South Africa decrease the crime problem. It is in your best interest and mine too!
