South Africa has been handed the incredible honour of hosting the very first Twenty20 Cricket World Cup! That is absolutely Awesome! The 2010 Football, now the Twenty20. Fantastic. Strange that I haven’t heard more about, maybe I’m just not listening.

Wikipedia says the following about the Twenty20 game and tournament:

Twenty20 is a form of cricket, originally introduced in the United Kingdom for professional inter-county competition by the England and Wales Cricket Board in 2003. It is a type of single innings cricket in which each team bats for a maximum of only 20 overs and closely resembles a form of the game which has been popular in English amateur cricket since at least the 1960s.

The ICC Twenty20 World Championship is the international championship of Twenty20 cricket. The event is organised by the sport’s governing body, the International Cricket Council (ICC) and is contested by all Test-playing nations (currently the only ten teams officially allowed to play the longest form and highest level of cricket), plus qualifiers. The inaugural championship is going to be held in South Africa in 2007.[1] The tournament will consist of 12 teams. The championship will be held around every two years.

The event will host 10 international cricket playing teams and two others:

Australia
Bangladesh
England
India
Pakistan
South Africa
New Zealand
Sri Lanka
West Indies
Zimbabwe

I am not sure who the remaining two teams are. Fantastic News. The tournament will be a nine day extravaganza of wickets, sixes and runs.

If you have more information regarding events please let SA Rocks know so that we can get the news out there! So far I am just looking forward to a tournament that doesn’t last six weeks!! GO SA!!!
