‘Good Old Tassies’ – If I pause for a moment to think back on all the good times I have had in the presence of this living legend of a wine – well it only bring a smile to my face – Tassies is South Africa’s legend wine!
Tassenberg is a dry red wine made mostly from Cinsaut, a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon and a drop of Pinot noir. Amazingly it has been around for no less than 71 years and as Distell (it’s big daddy) puts it, ‘hasn’t missed a good party in all those years’!
Tassies went through a slightly unpatriotic stage when, due to ‘quality grape shortages’, Argentinian grapes were used in the blend – but more recently it has come to its senses and is once again 100% South African homegrown stuff.
To be honest the fact that there were Argentines in my Tassies wine didn’t really phase me – I was too busy squinting my eyes and downing half the bottle in the car, before heading out to jol with friends at one of the local haunts.
I can even remember arriving late at a good friends 21st and having to enter the quite marque tent, right behind the guy making a speech and to the horror of the audience, with my trusty bottle of Tassies in my hands.
I am sure most of us have a ‘Tassies Story‘ – they are just as legendary as the wine itself and I would love to hear all of them in the comments. Hell, at R15 a bottle, I’m might be willing to give away a bottle for the best story!
