Poor Mike Stopforth has received a few questions regarding the donations section of SA Rocks. Let me enlighten you all to the err of my ways:
In the Support Us section of SA Rocks I placed a section relating to donations to the site. I must hastily admit that I mixed up the percentage of donations going to the NMCF with the proceeds that SA Rocks would generate through advertising (none yet!). ALL Donations are going to be given the NMCF not 20%.
All proceeds however (ad revenue and such) will be put towards the maintenance and growth of SA Rocks and the positivity that everyone involved in the site projects.
My apologies to everyone for the misunderstanding and to Mike for having to handle all the inquiries!

firstly – what funds does one need to maintain a blog?
secondly – how does one mistake 20% with 100%

…can’t we just directly donate to the NMCF?

It wasn’t the amount that was mistaken it was the differentiation between a donation, which No one has a claim to other than the organisation being donated to, and the money that would be earned through ad revenue.
You can definately directly to contribute to the NMCF, but would you? The other side of the coin is that if the money comes from SA Rocks you are helping one organisation grow (the NMCF) and you are helping SA Rocks grow in stature and credibility.
You don’t have to donate, there are other ways to support SA Rocks. It’s completely up to you. Like I said, my bad, it wasn’t meant to be a big issue, was meant to be a nice gesture and helping hand. That’s all.
Thanks for your thoughts and comments!

Anon, lighten up. Yes we could all donate individually but do you? Have you? SA Rocks offers us the opportunity to donate in response to the service the site provides. Wouldn’t it be cool if everyone in the SA blogosphere did the same – I guarantee you there’d be more donations to non-profits, maybe not millions, but every little bit helps.
In terms of what one needs to maintain a blog – it depends heavily on where that blog is hosted. Hosting in SA is pretty darn expensive, especially if your site is growing like this one is. I suppose if your company donates to charity it shouldn’t make a profit either?
Lastly, when someone like Nic does something nice for South Africa, let’s look for the good in it. Our country has enough cynicism, crap and baggage without us trying to slate the up and comers too. Sit back and thank your lucky stars for people like Nic who are doing the good work where many others aren’t.
