“Today, praise the Lord, wine was pressed from Cape grapes for the first time.”
– Jan van Riebeeck, 1659
The South African wine industry has been through a lot – from the first plantings of vines in 1655, through years of colonialism, trade limiting apartheid and now, the shining light of democracy (for more about it’s history go here).
If anything, like our fellow countrymen, our wine has got a lot of character! At times rough around the edges yet altogether colorful, rich in aroma’s and dynamically powerful in taste. Some our best is equal in stature to the world’s best and when is comes to ‘easy drinking’ wine, well no one beats us!
Our wines have all the necessary history, heritage and tradition to take over the world, they just haven’t done it – yet!
So to begin my weekly (every Tuesday) wine recommendation, I’ll start with a real little “easy drinking’ gem that hails from the highly esteemed Boekenhoutskloof:
The Wolftrap Red: ‘A Red to Make you Howl all Night’
This snarling beast is a spicy blend of Merlot, Grenache, Syrah, Rub Cabernet, Cabernet and Cinsault. It has a smooth silkiness on the finish that ‘betrays its class and belies its price tag’. For a mere R30 at most Pick n Pay’s, this is a an exceptionally good wine that will impress on every occasion. Buy it by the case, cook a feast, invite some great friends around and enjoy the killer time.
