The Sunday Times today reports that the war on poverty in South Africa is being won. This is interesting and amazing news!
Here are some of the stats being released by pollsters Research Surveys today (Figures in brackets are for 2005):

Shacks 1.3 million
Huts 1.7 million
What we have:
Work 48% (45%)
Indoor water 55% (52%)
No clean water 6% (9%)
Flush Toilets 57% (54%)
Electricity 88% (86%)
Education:
None 12.5%
Primary 10%
Matric 27%
Diploma 8%
Degree 3%
How we feel:
Proudly South African 96%
Happy 59% (56%)
Well 61% (61%)
Unsafe 75%
A failure 6% (7%)
Anxious 6% (7%)

In my opinion it seems as though the numbers are dropping and rising in all the appropriate and positive areas. The only major blemish on the stats above is that 75% of the people surveyed feel unsafe. This is not to be overlooked but there are many positives emerging from the surveys.
